Christie Expected To Address Bridge Scandal In Speech

Christie Expected To Address Bridge Scandal In Speech

Chris Christie will reportedly address the scandal swirling around his administration Tuesday during his annual speech to New Jersey lawmakers, but don't expect him to dwell on the subject.

Christie is expected to touch on the George Washington Bridge scandal in his "State of the State" address on Tuesday, although "he is unlikely to linger on it," according to the Washington Post.

The New York Times reported that he will "acknowledge the scandal" but he will "argue that it should not overshadow a four-year record of working well with officials from both parties."

Much of the speech — which is expected to run 30 minutes — will focus on improving the quality of New Jersey's education system, according to the Times.

No governor had ever failed to reappoint a sitting state Supreme Court justice, but Christie had suddenly done it twice – once for the court’s only African-American jurist, infuriating Democrats, and then again for a justice he actually liked. The governor, enraged, held a press conference to tell reporters, “I was not going to let her loose to the animals.”

The “animals,” in this case, were the Democrats in the state Senate.

Christie said that on the afternoon of Aug. 12, 2013.

On the morning of Aug. 13, 2013, Christie’s deputy chief of staff told the governor’s guy at the Port Authority, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee.”

Stories Add Up as Bully Image Trails Christie

By KATE ZERNIKE

In 2010, John F. McKeon, a New Jersey assemblyman, made what he thought was a mild comment on a radio program: Some of the public employees that Gov. Chris Christie was then vilifying had been some of the governor’s biggest supporters.

He was surprised to receive a handwritten note from Mr. Christie, telling him that he had heard the comments, and that he didn’t like them.

“I thought it was a joke,” Mr. McKeon recalled. “What governor would take the time to write a personal note over a relatively innocuous comment?”

But the gesture would come to seem genteel compared with the fate suffered by others in disagreements with Mr. Christie: a former governor who was stripped of police security at public events; a Rutgers professor who lost state financing for cherished programs; a state senator whose candidate for a judgeship suddenly stalled; another senator who was disinvited from an event with the governor in his own district.
