The head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, who is also known for his vocal opposition to same-sex marriage, is set to be created a Cardinal by Pope Francis next month.
According to the BBC, Archbishop Nichols will be one of 19 new Cardinals from around the world who will be appointed at the next consistory of Cardinals, which takes place at the Vatican on 22 February...
...Previously, Archbishop Nichols sanctioned a booklet that told Catholic teachers that they could be sacked for having a same-sex marriage or civil partnership...
...However, in his 2012 Christmas message, Archbishop Nichols decried equal marriage plans for England and Wales as an Orwellian shambles....

(20,136 posts)No they won't - because Francis opposes marriage equality and thinks homosexuality is a mental disorder. The policies won't change because he agrees with them.
It'd be a different story if he did in fact support marriage equality and the complaints were simply that he was "dragging his feet" or moving too slowly. But that's not the case.

(15,139 posts)He has towed the Vatican line, however, on gay marriage. He also allowed special masses for gay people until he caved to heavy pressure from the Vatican under Benedict to shut them down. The church where they were held was made a parish for Catholics who had converted from the Church of England. He was not a favorite of Benedict, who passed him over for elevation to cardinal. I think Nichols has progressive tendencies. He is a champion for economic equality, and I think, on balance, his elevation by Francis is a good thing.
