Many of you are familiar with my current set of circumstances of being homeless. I am feeling this will end soon--at least having some sight of the finish line. Its frustrating though. But something happened to me yesterday that I totally did not expect--besides the fact my car broke down.
After spending a night in a church (on the floor), I was brought back to facility along with the other individuals staying there, to where people hang out during the day. I was up early(4AM) believing it would be a good day to try to find a day job. Came back from church, went to start my car and nothing. Got a jump. It started, but then died. This shot my entire day of doing something with no wheels. Felt really down(that was Thursday). I later walked around some shops where there was a convenience store to get something to drink. Guy at counter asked how my day was going. Told my car won't start. He said he knew of a really good mechanic and gave me his number. Also said guy works out of his garage(assuming at his house).
I called, told the issue, and he thought it was fuel pump which is the gas tank. But assured he knew Honda's really well. I later got a call from someone from church who knows my current situation. He simply said I'll get you a tow since he had a free tow available from AAA. So yesterday just after lunch, tow truck showed up to take car to this dude with garage. What I discovered was a full-blown 1-man shop complete with electric lift and every guys dream: tons of tools (or toys) for anything.
To be short, I had had a brief conversation with this guy and told him I'm expecting a couple of days work on a pending paint job from a friend. Had no resources at the moment. He said hang on. So I waited about 3 hours--missing my chance to get on list for sleeping spot at church. I wound up sleeping in my car in apartment parking area. hardly slept. He was working on another car and had a ton of people calling him or asking about a car in back he's trying to sell. So he finally had time to do a couple of tests. The reason my car wouldn't start was the alternator. I thought oh boy! Not as serious as I thought. But I also have problems with a CV-boot on front axle that is about to break. Instead of starting to replace alternator, he instead started to remove my axle and was on phone to parts person of which axle he needed. He then asked from replacement alternator. I was wondering why he was pulling the axle out and relation to alternator. After waiting about 2 hours for parts, delivery person brings in a re maned' front axle, and alternator. He then said "we'll get you going on some better wheels" I was at a loss for words. But he didn't stop there. There was a problem with one of my cylinders not firing correctly. He re-threaded spake plug on head as someone had stripped threads. He also replaced the wire and connection. Then ran some other tests, tweaked a sensor adjustment that was lose, and battery connection.
The bottom line is, he said to send what I could when I get resettled and he was writing off the axel. At his point he was ready to close up and said to follow him to AM_PM station up the street and put $10 in.
There were other things in our conversation that I can't remember, but basically he said he understood.
I was absolutely amazed this guy did all this work..which was about 4 hours. He gave me his card and asked I refer people who have car problems--which I will do. But bottom line is I discovered there are truly people out there(including people on DU) who really care. I am still amazed.
I will no doubt remember this dude. I can't afford not to. I just had to share this. Couldn't hold back. Its inspiration for others.

(53,661 posts)Glad you found a church with people who cared and helped you with what you needed most.
Being evicted by that hateful person ended up being a blessing for you.

(18,219 posts)Thank you for posting it. There are times when it seems that there are no more good people left....when we have too many bad experiences in a row. But I know that there are wonderful people.
Make sure that you send this guy lots of business. And remember his even when you can afford to pay the bill. If we knew the area that this guy works, I am sure that many DUers would give him business, because we all want to give our money to the special people who are working to keep a small business going.

(10,497 posts)I gave up practicing law for 5 years to go learn the ropes and run the business. Once I learned how to do most of the mechanical work I took over running the place. I remembered what it was like not to know if the mechanic was being straight with me or not when they would tell me what was wrong and how much it would be. Due to that I would take the customer out in the shop and show them (if possible) what was wrong, explain how it went bad... My business tripled and I discovered which shops were crooked and wouldn't stand behind their work, and which ones were honest (about 50/50).
I tried to help the poor people if they were polite and would ask simply for them to act as outside sales for a little while and send me a couple of paying customers with car problems. Some would actually do it, but mostly I found the old saying to be true, "A happy customer will tell 3 people, an unhappy customer will tell 10!"

(33,224 posts)"Ralph" is always the first to volunteer his help.
When someone donates a car to our small nonprofit (usually non functional) Ralph always volunteers to get it running. I'm not as skilled as he is, but I have learned to do some preliminary diagnostics and take an educated guess at which parts are needed. I buy the parts before taking it to his shop because I know he won't charge us for them if he supplies the parts.
Anyone who asks me for advice gets sent to Ralph, but I know that it's not enough to make up for his generosity.

(2,397 posts)Then when it comes time to hear from them, they tell you job didn't come through, or customer postponed start day.
I'm really thinking of sleeping in car tonight. I don't want to feel like s***. But staying at shelter makes me feel like s***. I'm serious. I also talked to person who invited me to NM. She told me things do take time to happen.
I understand that. But a year of dealing with a teabagger nutcase is enough punishment for one person.
I want my happy wonderful personality back. I'm not "me" being in homeless situation.

(14,120 posts)That someone comes along and gives you that spark. That little bit of help that makes you feel like you can keep going.
Sometimes it something big, sometimes something as small as offering to share a sandwich. But, even the small thing is enough to give you that boost to keep going!

Frustrated that I can't get there as soon as I need to. Just talked to Budget truck Rep this morning and they estimate its will take about $350-400 in gas alone. And to person who said gas tanks are 50 gallons--no. Budget told me 35 gallons for 16'--24 foot trucks are 50 gallon tanks. About $150 off from outright getting truck. Tried to get day work today and got nothing....even after getting up at 6AM. I don't like to ask for money. I like to work for it.
But in this circumstance I do. But please understand this is not me. I think I'm asking because shelter is not a healthy place for me. I want to get out of there. I think you can imagine the kind of people that would be in a place like that. If you want to PM me you can, but I won't get to respond till tomorrow since I'm using library computer.
Yes, I'm hanging in there. But each day is more difficult than previous. Being in a shelter is like prison--somewhat. But I do thank you all for your encouragement. Samplegirl and Melanie in Texas receive Gold Stars for their talking me though another day. I am grateful. But I need some backing to get out of this. If someone is able to help, please send DU mail.
I posted his phone number. Want to tell people about him, but as mentioned, tea freaks could f'up a good thing as they always do. Nervous about that.
