Apparently, destroying documents related to a disaster where 11 people died, and tourism and commerce were destroyed along with the local environment, doesnt warrant jail time. Anthony Badalamenti, a cementing manager for Halliburton, pleaded guilty to one count of destroying evidence related to the Deepwater Horizon Disaster. His sentence was originally for one year in prison.
However, instead of one year in prison, U.S. District Judge Jay Zainey issued a sentence of a whole 100 hours of community service, and a $1,000 fine. This is on top of a year of probation. I still feel that youre a very honorable man. I have no doubt that youve learned from this mistake, were the judges words.
. . .
Its easy to say that this particular offense isnt really that big of a deal, especially when compared to what we know BP is guilty of in the Deepwater Horizon disaster. However, Halliburton used bad cement on the well. They ran tests on the cement for weeks prior to the explosion that showed it was unstable. BP also knew. Theyre the ones who accused Halliburton of destroying that evidence.
. . .
But a federal judge ruled that BP had to let Halliburton off the hook for third-party claims regarding the pollution in the Gulf. This was even though the pollution was mostly Halliburtons fault. Legally, BP is, and remains, almost entirely responsible for Deepwater Horizon disaster and its effects.

(25,592 posts)1. How many of us could kill 11 people, destroy a multimillion dollar drilling rig through negligence,
to say nothng of the polution and get his sentence?
We'd be seeing many years in prison.
Must be nice to be able to buy your way out of a multi-billion dollar fuck-up. Actually that was several high cost mistakes of incompetence.

(22,666 posts)2. To get away with virtually any crime, no matter how heinous or the magnitude...
...just become a corporation. When the repigs/tealiban talk about "freedom", this is what they're really referring to, IMO.
