America is set for the coldest month of the century as weather forecasters predict yet another freezing blast of Arctic air - putting Super Bowl Sunday in jeopardy. Teams have been warned to stay on high alert for changes to the scheduling of the first Super Bowl to be played in an open-air stadium.
Temperatures have already hit record lows, at times making parts of the U.S. colder than the North Pole, and are expected to plunge in the coming days.
The timing could not be worse for one of the biggest global sporting events, which will be exposed to the full force of the elements at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on February 2.
Eric Grubman, NFL vice president of business operations, told the Denver Post: 'We are advising teams to prepare in case a contingency plan goes into effect.'
The game could be moved to the preceding Friday or Saturday or the following Monday if authorities decide the weather will constitute a danger to public health.

(2,419 posts)Here is the current GFS weather map for Sunday. Its done in GMT so 0Z Monday is right around game time. No arctic air, no storm on the map. In fact it indicates that milder air will be working into the region. But, why let the facts stand in the way of a good scary story. Of course 10 day forecasts are only limited in their accuracy, but right now the most relied on forecast tool does not indicate what this story claims.

(22,974 posts)If the fans can't take it, they should stay home and watch it on TV.
Super Bowls should be held everywhere, including Green Bay and Pittsburgh.

(18,705 posts)Most people are flying in for this game. Not everyone wants to freeze watching a football game. How is the half time program suppose to work. The tickets cost big bucks for this game. Lets hope for nice weather. This is not a regular football game. Not everyone lives in a cold climate. I do wonder if the game is played in almost empty stadium if the weather is really.bad.

(22,974 posts)Like I said, they can stay home and watch it on TV.
I suggest they end the stupid halftime show.
But the No Football League undoubtedly agrees with all your points.

(18,705 posts)That is all that matters, not the game.
The really rich ticket holders will have heated sky boxes.
No game is worth watching people freeze.
If this Super Bowl has to be held later or to empty seats this will cost money.
I am with you about the half time show.
I am hoping for warmer weather.

(19,288 posts)The homeless are going to freeze to death and even the homeless in Atlanta will be in for a rude frosting on their little slab of cardboard on the concrete. Poor bastards.
Oh yeah, fuck, football.

(19,964 posts)Around these parts it's generally the poor who are most in danger. They might have a roof over their heads but no heat and little food. Some do not want to be identified out of fear of having their kids taken away so even finding some of the neediest can be damn difficult.
Don't know how it is in Atlanta, i.e., whether there are programs to help find the homeless and bring them in out of the cold. I would imagine this extended arctic weather is an anomaly in many parts of the country.

(19,964 posts)I wonder what the effects of unseasonably warm temps have been in parts of western Canada and Alaska?

(2,419 posts)I posted above, you can see a warm core high pressure system with temperatures above freezing located north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska. Nothing unusual there. Record drought in CA? Not important. Of course, only the weather in the northeast U.S. has any meaning! You can tell that climate change is a hoax based on what happens between Washington D.C. and Boston. All other global weather events are irrelevant. And of course, there is nothing more important than....THE BIG GAME! I'm surprised there's not an article about how the Super Bowl effects the weather instead of the other way around.
