Port Authority Chairman David Samson voted for a $256 million reconstruction of the rundown PATH station in Harrison three months after a builder represented by his law firm proposed converting a nearby warehouse into hundreds of luxury apartments, according to records and interviews.
Samson, now embroiled in the George Washington Bridge lane-closure controversy, wasnt the only commissioner with ties to land around the train station. Commissioner David Steiner also voted for the massive overhaul of the station, four months after he secured rights to build a 20-story apartment complex on another key parcel of land along the Passaic River, a half-mile from the commuter train stop.

(37,161 posts)Not saying that Samson was innocent in his timing (at all!), but the apartments are not the only reason for improvements to the Harrison station.

(154,021 posts)not surprised.
And a tad of abuse of power.
Color me shocked.
At least on this one I do not have to take detailed notes.

(37,161 posts)Harrison is right across the Passaic River from downtown Newark. The Harrison PATH station is a half mile from the Newark Penn Station where it terminates. Harrison is well-situated to support (or feed off of) projects to revitalize Newark's downtown, and the other end of the PATH line is the World Trade Center (~20 minutes from Harrison to WTC).
Add to that the opening of a 25,000-seat soccer stadium in Harrison in 2010 (with Red Bull's name plastered everywhere including the team, one guess as to their sponsor), and the Harrison station really did need improvement from the aging warehouse-district stop it had been.
The station redevelopment project didn't exactly come out of nowhere. My guess would be more to insider knowledge (knowing that the project would go through and not be shot down, and buying & developing choice properties when everyone else was still guessing), or maybe pressure on the town of Harrison or property owners to clear the way for the connected pal.

(154,021 posts)but the motive is not that complicated. Politicians care about control, and much of what happens at local and state level has to do with real estate. And no, this is not one party that does this either, even if we enjoy it when the other side does it.
And I am so glad I do not have to do primary, secondary and tertiary google searches, or PRRs. Trust me, that can suck.

(50,444 posts)is it Christie or is it David Sampson? Sampson seems to have his hand in everything that is coming to light and all of the scandals seems to have been to help clients of Sampson's law firm.
This new info re Sampson's vote just adds to my growing suspicion Sampson is the key to what really went on and why.
Here's the article re Sampson's vote on the Path project:
Report: Port Authority chairman's vote on PATH renovation raises questions
Gov. Chris Christie ally and Port Authority Chairman David Samson's actions are under scrutiny by the press again this month, this time for his vote to support the renovation of a train station across the street from land owned by a developer represented by Samson's law firm.
According to a report in the Record of Hackensack, in March 2012, Samson was among the Port Authority commissioners who voted to approve the $256 million renovation of the Harrison PATH station. The vote came just three months after a developer represented by Samson's law firm, Wolf & Samson, proposed converting a nearby warehouse into luxury apartments.
