(28,151 posts)Detroit really is a wonderful city in so many ways. I caught the tail-end of "old Detroit" as a little girl but, of course, things changed after the riots. Like so many others, we moved to the suburbs after that.
My dad was an accountant with GM, downtown Detroit, so we didn't move very far. I grew up going to Tiger games, plays at the Fischer Theater, concerts at the Joe and Cobo. Went to the Ethnic Festivals, the boat races, Belle Isle. In more recent years I live far north but would go to Detroit for state Dem conventions. I really miss Greektown!
I sometimes think maybe I should move back down and see if I can't do something to help our beautiful city...would love to see a trend of that sort of thing.
Thanks for the post!

(1,451 posts)We have a city with wonderful neighborhoods. we like our block parties and back yard cookouts. We are more connected than most people think. Downtown and Lansing have never had a real connection to our neighborhoods. And it doesn't matter what color Mayor we have they all get in office and get power drunk on themselves!!!!

(19,429 posts)Rides are 75 cents. Cost of the People Mover is $4 / ride.

(1,451 posts)But when I am downtown I see people using the People Mover. When we have events downtown like the WinterBlast that is going on now, they use it. They use it to get to different parking areas, restaurants, casino, and clubs. But I posted the video so that people will quit thinking we are the raccoon people

(6,228 posts)I ask this honestly. We went up to Ann Arbor for a game this past fall and everywhere we went in Detroit was a shit hole.
mstinamotorcity2
(1,451 posts)Now where is it you went. Couldn't been everywhere. Would you like a google location tour. I'll give you the areas and you look them up. No one has to lie!!!!These area are all over Detroit. Just like there are some bad ones. But that Shit hole you are talking about is our city. And there are no shitmongers in it!!!

(6,228 posts)Thanks for telling me what I already knew. I couldn't tell you where, as I am not from Detroit. We went out to a half dozen bars and restaurants that we just googled and used the garmin to get to. They were in different areas, but all were pretty sketchy.

(28,876 posts)Detroit's microbreweries tend to be in the better parts of town, so if you went to those and still found it sketchy, then Detroit is definitely not for you.
But just random bars around a city? Christ, I don't think I would do that anywhere. I strongly suggest you avoid that technique if you ever visit Philadelphia, for example.

(6,228 posts)I am not trying to say anything bad. Just relaying what I saw.

(28,876 posts)People in the area tend to go downtown for a "hardcore" or "real, no pretenses" experience. The suburban bars are for the slick or trendy bar experience. So most of the popular downtown bars are going to be in old factories or whatnot. It's kind of what is expected from a Detroit bar. Having lived out East, I tend to find the bars/clubs that try to be slick kind of pathetic.
Ann Arbor actually has quite a selection of great microbreweries you might check out if you ever come back into town. The whole gastropub thing is kind of their "brand".
But yeah, Detroit has some truly abysmal areas. The point is that there is real beauty as well...not so much in the bar scene though.

(1,451 posts)working professionals that live and work Downtown or near Downtown. If you truly want to have fun try a club that is not downtown. the drinks will be up to four dollars cheaper and you will meet great people. Go to our Latino district or Mexicantown as its called. They have great food and you can get two dollar margaritas with lunch or dinner. You must come out your comfort zone. Detroiters spot fake people a mile away
We are a city that believes in work. If you come out at 6 am in the morning you find bus stops crowed with people going to work. The traffic at that time of morning is unusual. Its busy. we have people who work different jobs besides the auto industry. That low income people are lazy just doesn't wash here.

(4,631 posts)I'm not sure where that is located. Looks to be near Indian Village or so. Here are some listings for a five mile radius of Indian Village.

I'm thinking property taxes would be more than an average mortgage.

(19,429 posts)Around them is a much larger blighted area.
Along E. Jefferson, there are a number of upscale neighborhoods. But the development is very uneven, with unimproved properties in between the developed pockets.

(1,451 posts)Try Warren East Outer drive area. Try Green Acres. Try Sherwood Forest . Try Eight mile Kelly Rd. Try E. Outer Drive and Van Dyke. Try Mound Rd and Charles St. (low income housing) Try Southfield Joy Rd (low income housing.) Try Palmer Park. Try the McNichols Livernois area. Seven mile and Livernois. I have more if you need them. I drive the city almost every day I know just about every place there is in the city. Good and bad.

(28,876 posts)What makes Detroit unique is the vacancy of those areas. But is that better or worse? I've been in parts of North Philadelphia I found more notable for their blight and poverty simply due to the fact that people still live there, with seemingly nowhere else to go. In my opinion, there exists more potential for an upward mobility in Detroit than in some of the more populated East Coast cities.
$500 dollars in your pocket can buy you a house to fix up in Detroit. $500 dollars doesn't even cover first month's rent on a 1bedroom apartment out east.

(1,451 posts)Just because people think we are so bankrupt they forget that the human aspect is the people who are still here and holding down our neighborhoods. We did not say we had all of the neighborhoods but the ones we have left we are fighting for. Yes we have some problems like any other major city. We are Detroiters and we matter!!!

(1,451 posts)Our city is like a lot of American cities. The only thing about Detroit is we don't want people to feel sorry for us. We just don't want people kicking us when we are down. Though most people are counting us out, we have not counted on them anyway. We are working among ourselves to keep our neighborhoods viable. Next time you come to Detroit pm me, I'll buy you a cold one. Welcome to DU

(1,537 posts)All the people I met there were very cool, they wanted to show me all of Detroit. I'm thankful they did. We can met at Fishbone's for some BBQ shrimp if I make it up that way again. Great food town. Only place to get a Big Boy combo or an "imitation" at the local places. Take care and so glad you love your city.
