UPDATE:Pentagon Says Military Dog Captured by Taliban Not Ours. Was Ally

(CNN) -- The Pentagon says a military dog seized by the Taliban in Afghanistan doesn't belong to U.S. forces, contrary to the Taliban's claim, but rather belongs to an ally force, a U.S. Department of Defense spokesman said Thursday.

The Taliban distributed a video of the dog in an elaborate harness and contended in links to its Twitter account that the "mujahideen seized US dog" during an "attempted nighttime raid" by U.S. forces on December 23 in the eastern province of Laghman.

But Cmdr. Bill Speaks said the dog isn't part of the U.S. military and belongs to another country's military in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

"I can confirm that ISAF did confirm that a coalition working dog went missing after an operation in December. However, this is not a U.S. military working dog," Speaks said.

I hope the dog is recovered. This is too sad.

They don't have the same relationship with dogs that western culture and especially American culture has.

I don't think the Taliban understand the dangers of crossing PETA.

Afghan Taliban capture British military dog

ISAF officials in Afghanistan have confirmed a military dog went missing during a mission in December last year.

US military sources say the dog belonged to a coalition partner and the BBC understands it was working for British forces.

The Taliban earlier released footage of what they claimed was a dog they captured from US troops.

They said the dog, apparently called Colonel, was wearing a GPS tracking device, a torch and small camera.

8. I wonder if the UK gives it's dogs rank like the US does. In the US the dog's rank is always higher

than it's handler so the handler will always show deference to the dog. I'm thinking Colonel may be it's rank. It doesn't seem like a good idea to have people calling "Colonel" in a military environment. Just a thought.

11. I didn't read that article. The one I read said the dog's name was Colonel. US service dogs wear

their rank patches sometimes. I thought the Taliban saw something that said Colonel and confused his rank with his name. I see now from your article that they named him that. Thanks for clarifying. The whole thing makes me sick, poor dog has no idea what this is all about.

12. that's what I figured too. And when they saw "colonel" they also assumed he was an American dog

although the Brits aren't confirming, that seems most likely.

If you watch the video you can see how frightened the poor boy is. Not shaking frightened, holding himself together and dispirited. I think he does have a good idea what it is about. Not the details, but that his life is in danger, that he's in a trap and can't get out, and if he does get out, has no idea where his handler is or where to go. A Brit solder was killed in the firefight and I can't help but wonder if that soldier was his handler.
