Report: Iran sending warships toward U.S. maritime bordersWashington (CNN) -- A senior Iranian naval official says Iran is sending warships toward U.S. maritime borders to send a message, a move a U.S. defense official characterized as an announcement, not a deployment.
"Iran's military fleet is approaching the United States' maritime borders, and this move has a message," Adm. Afshin Rezayee Haddad said, the semiofficial Fars news agency reported Saturday.
The plan, according to Fars, is a response to the United States beefing up its naval presence in the Persian Gulf. The U.S. 5th Fleet is based in Bahrain.
Haddad said the Iranian fleet was under way and approaching the Atlantic Ocean "via the waters near South Africa," a claim that has not been confirmed.

(22,000 posts)I agree it's not a smart move. If they accidentally drifted from international waters into ours all hell would break loose.

(4,426 posts)If they move into the Atlantic "missile box" off the east coast, their entire fleet would be on about a 60 second fuse for total destruction if they even looked like they were preparing a launch. We still have a lot of Cold War assets that been waiting for a mission for about 20 years.

Environmentally friendly propulsion though!

(16,200 posts)I don't get why people here think it's a big deal. So they send some ships to patrol in international waters off our coast. It's not like they would actually do something stupid like attempt an attack...That would be too fun for our submarines!

It's just that we like to be everywhere because we have an over abundance of money with which to
spend on warships.
Those other countries, Iran included, eh, not so much.
