A Mistake! NJ's Largest Newspaper....

calls their endorsement of Christie a mistake! (Oh, they just noticed?) A bitter pill for those of us who supported Buono. They also go on after criticizing Christie to justify their endorsement by citing some of his accomplishments and calling Buono "not up to the job". The portion that goes after Christie is fun to read however.

Chris Christie endorsement is regrettable

Not quite. An endorsement is not a love embrace. It is a choice between two flawed human beings. And the winner is often the less bad option.

But yes, we blew this one. When the endorsement ran, I could not get a cup of coffee in the People’s Republic of Montclair without my liberal friends taunting me. Back then, I pushed back.

Yes, we knew Christie was a bully. But we didn’t know his crew was crazy enough to put people’s lives at risk in Fort Lee as a means to pressure the mayor. We didn’t know he would use Hurricane Sandy aid as a political slush fund. And we certainly didn’t know that Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer was sitting on a credible charge of extortion by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.

Even before this scandal train got rolling, this endorsement was a close call and a split vote among the editorial board. We regard Christie as the most overrated politician in the country, at least until now, a man who is better at talking than governing. We criticized him for trashing the working poor, for his tea party approach to the environment, for his opposition to gay marriage and a livable minimum wage. And so on.

Do they understand what their job is?
The truth is this....Newspapers are dying. the only people who still buy the paper are the geriatrics who have done so all their lives. They are buying the editorial page that caters to their old school beliefs. Any paper you pick up is infested with conservative columns attacking the president. Attacking the poor. Echoing the Reagon philosophy.
So they stopped doing their job a long time ago and now their job is to keep those few old timers as customers. Its a vicious cycle that will contribute to their own demise.
Had they stuck to their original manifest they may have had a chance in the long run, to evolve. They will die with their customer base.

Even the more liberal and fact based Bergen Record endorsed Christie (and they broke the scandal).

And here at DU people were just loving him. Post after nauseating post about what a good guy he was.

I have always despised him and I have spent the past four years arguing with Democrats who "just like his style".

Christie is a big, crass oaf. He has been acting like a bore, using tax dollars to hurt the very people who paid them and making REALLY STUPID decisions for the state since the day he took office.

People are easily led.

Around here people were swooning and hoping for him to become a democrat after he met and toured around with Obama and made a few not bat shit crazy statements. It was extraordinary.... like one day and 100 words could magic Christie into being a decent human that one wants to associate with. Easily led indeed.

The language in his mea culpa marginalizes an honest journalist, Rachel Madow, calling her a liberal TV hero. He also refers to the citizens of Montclair as communists. Montclair votes 90% Democratic.
Send letters to Newhouse Publications demanding Moran be relegated to proof reading the Sunday comics.

Simply for the fact your fallback is that your choice was between two flawed human beings and you chose the less bad option.

If that's your best effort to select a candidate, then switch your selection after choosing the less bad option!!! Because it is people like you who are always making the wrong choice. We heard the same thing back in 2000, when it was a choice between Gore and Bush. We've had enough already of your stupidity! And we're left straddled with another mistake that it'll take us years to recover from.

was a lame attempt at demonstrating they were open-minded. It was apparent Buono was going down. They probably saw the endorsement as inconsequential. They certainly knew something was brewing with the GWB. They knew about Todd Christie and Ashcroft. They knew about his days as a freeholder. They saw his heavy-handed approach to the Highlands Council and certainly had to have heard the rumors that commissioners were strong-armed for votes. It was just a failure of moral courage.

Criticized him? Ouchie!

For taking anti-human, bigoted, ignorant, anti-environment, anti-human rights and worker rights and then going after the Commons, the social safety net and all of that?

They wait until after Christie's wrecking crew takes the Fifth to question their judgment of supporting a man they knew was a bully? No alarm bells?

What were Christie's superior policy points versus Buono's?

I doubt seriously that any of the things on the list that they oh, much too late criticize him for, were on her platform.

at those guys.

How were we supposed to know he was really a creep" approach to be more of a salve to make themselves feel better for being so stupid and short sighted rather than a credible excuse for the consumption of the rest of the world. Put aside his policy positions, they knew this guy and he wasn't a very high character person either. What reason does that leave for supporting him?

You endorsed Governor Soprano for the same reason just about everybody else did: because he was going to win anyway. Or (now that we have the true picture of Christie's management style) perhaps it was because you feared receiving "radio silence" from the his administration, or even being boycotted by your most lucrative advertisers. But now that you've been scooped by the relatively small-potato Bergen Record and even the national media is wondering why they didn't notice that the emperor has no clothes, it's safe to pile on and take yourself off record of having endorsed the REAL loser.
