The first shot was no problem except a little soreness in the arm, until day 5 post-shot when a large bump (about 3" long, 2" wide and about 1/4" raised) showed up at the injection site. It was hot and itchy. It lasted till day 10 and then went away. Weirdly, it puffed up my polio scar, but that went back down with the bump. I'm told this reaction is not common, but also not particularly rare.Had the second shot yesterday morning. A little soreness in the arm building throughout the day, a little tiredness. Woke in the night with aching joints. Like a medium-bad flu. 2 Advil took care of it and I slept through the rest of the night. (My doc said to give the shot at least 12 hours to begin the immune response before taking anything if I could, so it was more like 17 hours before I took the Advil.)
This morning, achy again, some minor chills and very tired. Taking Advil and it's doing the job. Drinking tons of water. The aches are definitely better now than they were during the night. I am guessing this will all be done by tomorrow morning. If it is NOT, I'll update this.
Not going to lie. I feel medium-crappy. Not awful, nothing debilitating, but not great. But I know the feelings accompanying the miracle of building an immune response (I'm trying to be positive) are much preferable to Covid.
It's not that big a deal. You can do it!
ETA a day later: Aches continued through last night (night of day 2) and I slept a really long time, but woke this morning feeling just fine. It's done! I know it's 2 more weeks before I have full immunity, but you cannot imagine how freeing this feels. You are going to be very happy.

(21,606 posts)There are two pharmacies in my area that I know of who give shots when they have any vaccine. I only discovered by accident that they gave shots. No public info on it.
I have tried both pharmacies every day for two weeks, early morning and throughout the day, both online and on the phone since one of them says they also do phone appts. Every time the message is the same - all available appointments taken; they don't know when or if there will be more vaccine; please continue checking.
My primary care office applied to be a vaccination giver. It's a huge med practice throughout the county. My NP said they have not received onfo on approval yet but think they MIGHT have some vaccine by April, so they put me on a waiting list.
At this rate, it looks like the only protection I will ever get from covid is masks, distancing, and hand washing. As far as I can see, there is no vaccine coordination and planning in NY state. Trying to get vaccinated is like checking to see if your lottery ticket is a winner.

(72,300 posts)I stay home except grocery shopping for milk and bread.
We are wearing 2 mask when going out.
The pharmacy I use for our prescriptions is listed as a spot for a shot. Web page said 'no appointments available'.

(21,606 posts)at local nursing homes, but none of the CVS in my area are giving out vaccines to other eligible people.
Now I just laugh every time Cuomo announces new categories of eligible people since it means nothing to be eligible when you can't get a shot. Sent that mesage to his office.

(31,528 posts)was sore the next day, but it only lasted a few hours. Nothing else to report, so far.
My sister got her second shot a week or so ago. She had mild fever and achy joints, but it passed in a days time.

(12,414 posts)Friday morning I did some painting around the house and worked in my shop. Started feeling sore and by evening had a slight fever.
Woke up yesterday feeling fine, finished painting, and put in a few more hours in shop. Felt tired by mid afternoon.
Both days I jumped in hot tub late afternoon due to body aches.
Today I would say I am over any side effects. Lots of water, as you suggest, is important.

(7,286 posts)What is it about the second shot that brings these kinds of side effects on? Is it a more powerful dose I wonder?
I've had my first one several days ago, no side effects whatsoever, not even soreness in the arm.
But I'm not looking forward to the second, because I keep seeing these kinds of reports.
oh by the way, I appreciate you sharing your experience.

(51,004 posts)intruder and goes after it. Your reaction might be anything from zero to mild as the immune response is mounted. The body adjusts and kills off the intruder and everyone calms down and goes back to their regular business.
When you get the second shot, your immune system recognizes the intruder again and says, "You again, dammit! I thought we took care of you! Well, we will this time!" The immune response it throws at the intruder is much larger than the first time because it wants to just get rid of the damn thing.

(13,499 posts)81 and 78, had their second doses two weeks ago. Both said a little arm soreness. No fever. No body aches (other than what an 81 year old normally feels).
But my 24 year old niece had her second dose yesterday and she's running a fever today. So.....
Random?

(7,286 posts)The range is really remarkable. I've had the luck of nature (for lack of a better term) never to experience any kind of reaction to every vaccine I've ever had. I do every flu shot every season, pneumonia shots every couple of years or so, recently got another tetanus booster. 2 or 3 months ago I've had two shingles shots a month apart from each other.
No symptoms except a somewhat sore arm with both the booster and the shingles.
Just had my first Moderna shot last week. no sore arm, no side effects. But my neighbor has had fever, aches and pains, fatigue just feeling blah.
We'll see what is in store for me next month when I receive my second shot. I'll probably get the full monty of effects.

(22,380 posts)I had absolutely no reaction, barely a sore arm. They almost gave me Moderna. I noticed and sent them off to find Pfizer. They couldn't for a while. I pointed to my (fat) book and said I'm only half way through, I can wait.
Now with no reaction I kind of wonder if there was something in that syringe.....

(9,952 posts)shot site. I hadn't felt anything for a couple weeks and out of nowhere I had this big red itchy patch on my arm. Couple days later, it is mostly gone.
Well, thru the worst, good for you. I haven't heard from anyone about an appointment for second shit. Gonna try to get ahold of someone next week.

(24,041 posts)...the day after the first one with temp of 102, most unpleasant chills, body aches, fatigue, and nausea. Lasted about 36 hours.
I had the virus itself in early December, with similar symptoms - lasted about 10 days, with a pattern of 3 days on, 1-2 days off, and then another cycle, for 3 cycles. I actually felt worse after the shot.
My surmise is that my immune system reacted to the first dose as if it were the booster, seeing as Id already had the illness.
We shall see what happens after this upcoming one.

(36,747 posts)They are seeing your reaction with people who they suspect had a earlier SARS-CoV-2 infection. Its getting to the point where when they see your type of reaction on the first shot, they assume they had the virus.

(7,574 posts)Still waiting for Pharmacies here to get vaccines. Seems slow to me. I'm in group 1b. Only know one person who has had the shots, had no effects other than slightly sore arm. (Phizer)

(33,198 posts)Mostly similar to your experience.
With the addition of a slight headache and feeling a 'flush' or 'glow' in their torso the day after the first shot.
So, bottom line, the experience is on par with flu shots.
The only 'gayness' I've heard about is a feeling of joy over finally having something to beat back the COVID virus. This phenomenon is talked about by those representing all sexual orientations.

(1,474 posts)Achy and lethargic Saturday morning into afternoon, better enough in the early evening to take the dogs out for 30 minutes, and then a little bit achy/sweaty again last night, but feel absolutely 100 percent today -- even better because now I know I have immunity in the midst of a global pandemic.
BTW, the only symptom I had after dose 1 was the sore arm, and that was worse with dose 2, but even that is pretty much gone less than 48 hours later.

(50,303 posts)(something I have to keep reminding myself of), but from an improperly administered injection. I felt absolutely horrible for a couple of months and could barely sleep for the pain. I hope there are no pharmacists at the site giving shots. LOL.

(51,004 posts)But I think they have all gotten very good at administering them in these mega sites. They told me yesterday that they give 1500 vaccines a day and are ramping up to double that.

(16,254 posts)Minimal soreness in the arm, but not as sore as the flu shot. I just kept drinking water all evening and slept like a baby. With little reaction yesterday or today, I hope that doesn't mean it isn't working.

(30 posts)On February 2nd. No side effects at all. I will have my second on February 23. My wife, a health care provider, has had both and had no side effects at all. Hope the second for me goes as well as the first. Im glad for all that we have this and Im glad President Biden is expediting these vaccinations. Thanks to all for sharing your experiences.

(20,006 posts)Wow. The place was packed with veterans and cheerful VA staff organizing the project flawlessly. I don't know if that's a reflection of new VA Secretary Denis McDonough, who was only sworn in 5 days ago, but it was heartening to see something work so well. They even handed out Valentine's Day cards to everybody on their way out.
No side effects so far.

(1,338 posts)Second shot in 18 days (March 4th, same day trump is miraculously being inaugurated! ) I am ready for it--also Moderna. I had foolishly thought maybe my husband and I could stagger our vaccinations so one of us is fine to tend the dogs, etc. while the other has the reaction. That was back in about early. June... now of course it's a matter of just getting the vaccinations and dealing with the fallout afterward. Thanks for the warning and info about Advil. Our shots are sometime between 11 and noon so it will hit overnight. Argh. But the peace of mind that will follow will be worth it.
