Mark Kelly goes shooting after testifying on gun control

Mark Kelly, the husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, went shooting yesterday after testifying in favor of additional gun control at the Oregon Legislature. Kelly, a former Navy captain and former astronaut, was in Oregon to testify at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in support of Sen. Floyd Prozanski’s “universal background check” bill, SB 1551.

As we reported on Wednesday, the man who shot Gabby Giffords in 2011 purchased the gun legally after passing a background check, and so Mark Kelly’s reason for testifying yesterday was more about his support of gun control in general than any relevance to the Oregon bill. In fact, Kelly acknowledged yesterday that the man who had shot his wife had passed a background check.

Later in the day, Kelly went shooting at the Portland Police Bureau Central Precinct Range.
It’s not the first time that Mark Kelly has participated in gun activities right after testifying in favor of gun control. Last March, Kelly purchased an AR-15 “assault rifle” and a .45 cal handgun the day after testifying before the Colorado State Senate in support of “universal background checks.”

It’s also not the first time that Mark Kelly has been photographed shooting. Last April, Kelly was filmed by CNN shooting his wife’s Glock 9mm handgun – the same type of handgun that was used in his wife’s shooting.

He and Gabby have found the right balance - focus on UBCs while not demonizing gun owners.

I support Sean Penn who recently gave up his 65 guns to be turned into a piece of art. His girlfriend Charlize Theron convinced him to give up his hoarding of guns after she told the story of her father's death and how he terrorized their family.

I don't understand why the Kellys insist on keeping up this guns are good bullshit after what happened to her.

I suspect that because they know many gun owners and therefore understand that the vast majority use their guns responsibly and safely - just as they do.

she wasn't shot, her father and his brother were because he was on a rampage with his terrifying tool.
Mom stepped in and shot them both, killing her father.

I don't want The Kelly's promoting guns.
Their message is mixed, confusing, and weird.

so why bother with all the theatrics?

We lost two Dems because this mainstream message he spews is ignored by the gun culture and Democrats don't fucking vote
in midterms and special elections.

They are already trying to repeal the magazine limit in the state where 70 people were shot in a matter of minutes, seconds?

5. just because he goes shooting does not have to mean he is against gun control

proper licensing. Target shooting and hunting. Those who enjoy those things may be in favor of gun control and willing to get licenses. A great example of how purity can lose allies.

14. What Gun Control? - He's For Gun Responsibility

the only two issues they support are background checks and stopping gun trafficking.

Two no-brainers and no courage what-so-ever on other gun issues that should be addressed like deadly magazine clips designed to kill many a matter of seconds.

Where is the control part in Mr. Kelly's position?

It's that false message of the gubmint coming to take ALL yur guns away from you in the middle of the night thinking that halts an honest conversation about safety and control.

I am very much for gun control but I don't agree at all with getting rid of every gun there is out there - that's just looking for abrasion.
