James Taylor says fracking in Carolina is on his mind

Singer James Taylor is speaking out against fracking in North Carolina.

Taylor, who was raised in Chapel Hill, is starring in TV spots for the Natural Resources Defense Council, the first step in what will be a major anti-fracking campaign between now and the next legislative session in May.

While “Carolina in My Mind” plays in the background, Taylor warns of the dangers of fracking and says: “Big oil and gas are pushing the governor and the legislature to allow reckless fracking.

“Fracking is dirty and it’s dangerous. It can poison drinking water, and chemicals in fracking fluid are known to cause cancer.”

Bob Keefe of the NRDC said the ads will run for the next two weeks on WRAL, WTVD and WNCN as well as Time Warner Cable and Pandora radio. He declined to say how much money the organization is spending on the ad buy, but said Taylor was not being paid to appear in the ads.

I think this is just about my favorite JT song: I had the good fortune to meet him and to here him play this and other songs when he was a patient at Austin Riggs and my crazy ass school/early college, Simon's Rock, was doing a play with patients there.

we are willing to take with our own environment: fracking, a pipeline running over a huge underground water source, a new nuke being built at great expense, etc. I suspect that rather than tell us the truth and deal with oil depletion and climate change the PTB are afraid to further upset the apple cart in an already bad economy. Instead they are going to let this play itself out regardless of the consequences. Unlike our ancestors this generation has given up and just wants to play the present crisis right down to the line and secure their own safety without giving a s--t about the rest of us.

In other words they are not even going to try. They are just giving up.
