It's the circulation of warm and cold water currents in the Atlantic. During the Medieval Warm Period, meltinglaciers around the North Pole dumped fresh water into the oceans. It is lighter and sinks less easily than saltwater, so it shut down the conveyor, helping to cause the Little Ice Age. So far, according to scientists, it is not happening again now, but with climate change, it's something they're watching for. And haven't we been hearing that even though we've been freezing down here in the US, the Arctic has been warmer than average?

but I wish they hadn't referred to the polar vortex that way. It's always there, it just usually stays further north is all.
