Harry Reid: Prostitution may hurt RNC bid (in Vegas)
Nevada’s legalized prostitution industry may be an impediment to the state’s pursuit of the Republican National Convention, according to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
In an interview with the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Democratic leader said that the state’s prostitution industry contributes to Nevada’s poor national image, in a way that gambling no longer does as it has spread across the United States.
Reid said he is supportive of Las Vegas in its bid to land the RNC in 2016, but predicted that prostitution “would be an issue,” even though it is banned in Las Vegas and several other densely populated areas of the state.
“There are people who don’t come to the state of Nevada for a number of reasons, like our education system and the image that we have,” Reid said. “And one of the images we have had, gambling, has long since (passed) as a negative. But prostitution hasn’t.”
