Google announces plan to bring high-speed 'Fiber' internet to 34 cities (a bit of good news)

Source: The Guardian
Wednesday 19 February 2014 17.59 EST

Expansion of ‘Google Fiber’ would bring competition to existing broadband carriers, including cable giant Comcast Corp

Google is planning to offer high-speed internet service in 34 more cities scattered across eight states in the company’s boldest challenge yet to cable and telecommunications providers.

The blueprint is tentative because Google Inc needs to work out logistics with government leaders in the communities where it hopes to build the networks needed to deliver its service. The company hopes to provide updates by the end of the year.

The plans are the clearest sign yet that Google, already the internet’s most powerful internet company, intends to become a bigger player in providing access to the internet, too.

---------

f Google realizes its goal, the company will provide high-speed internet service in these cities: Phoenix; Scottsdale, Arizona; Tempe, Arizona; San Jose, California.; Santa Clara, California; Sunnyvale, California; Mountain View, California; Palo Alto, California; Atlanta; Avondale Estates, Georgia; Brookhaven, Georgia.; College Park, Georgia; Decatur, Georgia; East Point, Georgia; Hapeville, Georgia; Sandy Springs, Georgia; Smyrna, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; Charlotte, North Carolina; Carrboro, Cary, North Carolina; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Durham, North Carolina; Garner, North Carolina; Morrisville, North Carolina; Raleigh, North Carolina; Portland, Oregon; Beaverton, Oregon; Hillsboro, Oregon; Gresham, Oregon; Lake Oswego, Oregon; Tigard, Oregon; San Antonio; and Salt Lake City.

Google does it. Everyone does it. That's very unlikely to change.

Have a look at who's tracking whom and where.

it will take so long to get the clearance and to construct it ...hopefully the NSA will be reigned in and reforms will be made to stop this surveillance on every American.

Wishful thinking, I know....but at least this would give competition to Comcast/TimeWarner/ATT/Verizon domination. And none of them have offered us faster internet because they aren't extending fiber-optic buildout. My DSL is constantly disrupted and I live in a large city.
