Well, since he is the next Chris Christie, we don't want Scott Walker to feel deprived or inferior. He seems just as capable of bullying and corrupt behavior. Might as well give him his due too. I don't have the same access to information in Wisconsin that I do in my home state so I hope all of you Badgers out there will chip in. But I'll get you started.

(2,419 posts)a couple of hours in Wisconsin. I don't pretend to know the state. But here is an interesting Jean Shepherd show from 1976 where he discusses what a fascinating state Wisconsin is. The same state that gave us McCarthy gave us "Fighting Bob" La Follette and how the state is incredibly split.

(2,419 posts)might indeed be a good place to start digging.
In the piece posted here on Wednesday entitled, What Is Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker Not Telling Us About Financial Stress Test Legislation, I recounted the story of a Wisconsin private security guard, Lance Gosnell, who claims to have overheard a conversation involving a gentleman Gosnell believes to be Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald. The alleged conversation took place on an elevator in the State Capital building.
According to Mr. Gosnell, he listened as the parties discussed the blog posted by Wisconsin Democratic political player and one time gubernatorial candidate, Ed Garvey, suggesting that Gov. Walker might be planning to introduce emergency financial legislation something Walker has emphatically denied.

(2,419 posts)there doesn't seem to be the same zeal to go after Walker that there is against Christie. Is it because of the recall election? Is it the difference between Wisconsin & NJ? Is it because Christie is more entertaining/polarizing/annoying (choose your adjective)?
Walker seems to be just as manipulative and corrupt and he certainly has spent his 4 years wreaking havoc. (I just found out he put a homebuilder's industry advocate in charge of the Department of Natural Resources!) Some insight would be interesting. Thanks in advance.

(1,381 posts)Really, Madison and Milwaukee are the only extremely liberal parts of the State. Although there are parts of the State that vote Dem, they do not seem to hate Walker as much. They are not as "liberal".
I tried to explain this during the recalls, and I will try again. I live in a red part of the State (smack dab in the middle). I have not heard one person complain about these emails, except to say "Did they look at Tom Barretts staffs private emails too?" Most people around here honestly feel that it is a witch hunt, and that both sides do it.
As far as the John Doe II ongoing investigation, that also is met with eye rolls. Quite honestly people can't understand how the investigation can look at conservative groups that backed Walker without finding the same exact thing with the unions that backed Barrett.
Unless something salacious comes out in the emails about Walker (outside political wonk) I honestly do not see this affecting his reelection chances (Mary Burke has yet to make an impression on the voters).
This may effect his national aspirations, but not his state ones. I think the voters that are on his side now will stay on his side, and vice versa. His campaign has done a good job, at least in my part of the state with convincing people it is just more of the same. The fact that ALL of these emails were already scrutinized by the DA investigating, and the investigation was dropped says that there is no there, there.
Sorry to be a bummer, and I hope I am wrong, I am just not seeing any scandal here in this part of the state.
Laxman
(2,419 posts)I would only submit this for your consideration. Christie was/is extraordinarily popular here in NJ. The same dismissals of Bridgegate as not that big a deal continue here. He still has his supporters. However, the increased scrutiny has started to lead to a boatload of other things comping out of the woodwork. Very damaging things. My expectation would be that there are similar scurrilous items awaiting discovery in Wisconsin. Walker has been operating with impunity long enough to make him a victim of his own hubris and ambition. It just takes someone who knows where to dig.
forthemiddle
(1,381 posts)But from my perspective, and I know this is a judgmental opinion, when I think of New Jersey, I think of the mob and corruption so the stuff being talked about Christie didn't surprise me. Again I know that is stereotypical, but that is my outside perspective. He was also a known bully. I just don't know if Walker has that same reputation, not yet anyway.
I think also that New Jersey is the biggest media market in the world, so everyone knows who Christie is, I am not sure the same thing can be said about Walker.
Although Walker got national recognition for Act 10 (the union breaking law) the rest of it seems too much inside baseball.
I don't know, that is just my outside looking in, and inside looking out perspective. I am also surrounded by conservative voters, so my world view is tainted by that.
Beach Rat
(273 posts)Back in November Laxman took me fishing down at the beach. We must have caught and released 20 big striped bass. It was really a beautiful day and we were sitting on the sand talking about the election that was like two weeks earlier. I was bitching about how could Christie have gotten elected by such a big margin when he was such a piece of crap. He looked at me and held up one of the lures we were using and said don't worry, he's going to catch himself. He said the water was filled with real fish and the stripers were all gorged on the little fish. Even so they still kept biting this piece of plastic we were throwing in the water. He said Christie and his buddies can't help themselves. Just like the fish, its in their nature. Eventually they're going to bite on the wrong thing and get hooked. (or something to that effect) Maybe it doesn't translate that well but it sounded really profound on the beach.
What do you fish for out there. Walleyes? Walker must have some Walleye in him. I've got to think that Walker's nature had him biting on the wrong thing at least a couple of times.

(1,381 posts)During the recall, there were groups trying to dig up everything on him, (even a possible ex girlfriend abortion), but nothing came up, so I really think if it is just political wonk stuff (secret campaign emails, coordination), I just don't see it touching him. Even the independents gave him the benefit of the doubt, so we will see.
I just don't see the Democrats getting out the vote like they did for Obama. The only contender for next falls Governor race is a unexciting, millionaire heiress (her family owns Trek Bicycles) that seems a little to corporate of me.

(6,012 posts)The 'zeal' to go after Christie is driven in large part by the proximate media center of NYC. We don't have the kind of media to elevate the exposure of Walker to the same levels.

(1,381 posts)I don't think that people from outside the state realize how polarized the state really is.
As I said in my previous post, the people in my part of the state honestly argue that this whole scandal is nothing but a witchhunt. They believe that if the same scrutiny was put upon the Democrat campaigns (Tom Barretts campaign in the past two elections) that the same exact stuff would be found. I don't know that is necessarily head in the sand either. For example, Barretts own wife was caught emailing on the state computers (she is a teacher) campaign/protest rallies during the recall election, and no investigation was done.
They also point out that the unions "coordinated" with the campaigns, and there is no John Doe investigation into that.
So rightly or wrongly, I just do not see any of this scandal touching Walker in Wisconsin. His support is solid. It may, however, resonate better with national voters when he declares he's running for President.
I also would love your opinion on Mary Burke? Do the Democrats really want their own millionaire heiress running for Governor? It seems that all the stuff said about Ron Johnson in the senate campaign could be said about her? But maybe I am too cynical. I would have preferred Kathleen Vineout.
PeaceNikki
(27,985 posts)And they are suspicious of/in denial of EVERY criticism of him.
Regarding the recall & 2014: in my experience, MANY "middle of the road Republicans" or independents got out and voted for Walker on 'principle' that the recall was bad. Some of those folks need to be persuaded to stay home this fall or tip the scales in our favor. I am not sure how to do that. The other demographic we need is the Dane and Milwaukee county voters who got out to reelect Obama but sat out in 2010. There were a lot of them.
On Burke: meh. I think like many local Dems I know - I don't love her or hate her. I really hope we take out Walker - by any means. It would take someone like Feingold to get me excited. But that isn't going to happen. And I would rather see him on SCOTUS anyway.
forthemiddle
(1,381 posts)There is no stopping us!
It is still early, but I don't see the Democratic Party, or the Burke campaign doing enough to define her. I see the GOP defining her so far, and it isn't a flattering picture. That should change, but your opinion of being "meh" on her is what I see, and I do not think that is enough to get our side out to vote, or the other side staying home.
Feingold on SCOTUS, now that's and idea......

(2,419 posts)on Governor Walker's scandals. Not sensational enough to attract media attention, but truly corrosive to democracy nonetheless. From Chris Rikert at the Wisconsin State Journal:
Maybe so. And yet in the long run, Walkers brand of politics is more corrosive to representative democracy than a whole closet full of blue dresses.
The materials released last week by the court hearing an appeal by convicted former Walker aide Kelly Rindfleisch reminded me of that line about how boring real evil is.

Little separation between government, campaign
It was April 29, 2010, and Scott Walker was in full campaign mode in his race for governor.
The Milwaukee County executive was feeling the heat from a group of county supervisors, who planned to a hold an 11 a.m. news conference to rip his stewardship of the county's troubled Mental Health Complex.
Walker, his campaign aides and taxpayer-funded county staff were burning up private email, trying to counter the supervisors' expected attack. To knock down complaints, aides decided they needed a statement from a political ally, and focused on state Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills).
At 10:25 a.m., Walker writing from his campaign email account weighed in.
He would not only write Darling's response, he would order that the communication be done in a way so that it would remain secret from the public.
