will be sticking points... Anyone heard how they are getting them back into the US?

I love this story and hope it sends a very strong signal back to Russia and other countries who view stray dogs as merely expendable.

We have an excellent no-kill shelter here in Little Rock, but they are always full. The municipal shelters do what they can, but end up euthanizing a large number of pets.

Spay. Neuter. Adopt from shelters.

Same here in Vegas...tons of cats and dogs get dumped...dumping is against the law, but people still do it...they need to really crack down on it.

It makes me so mad.

The most recent one was a beautiful tuxedo cat- we came around the corner just in time to see his former owner hop in his car and drive away.

We picked him up and brought him inside. Holding him in my lap, I discovered that he had been declawed. What kind of person abandons a defenseless cat???

My kids said we needed to find "one of those crazy cat ladies" to take him in. I told them that around here, we ARE the crazy cat lady.

Last year, it was a gorgeous chocolate lab. So gorgeous, we didn't realize she was homeless for quite awhile. She hung out with the neighbor's australian shepherd and was pregnant by the time we figured out she didn't belong to anyone. She had nine puppies. It took us nine months to find homes for them.

These were lucky. Many of the dogs and cats dropped off are hit by cars, or shot, or badly injured by other animals out here. We do our best to round them up and rehome them, but can't save everyone.

I *AM* the crazy cat lady, too! LOL

I do what I can, and it's only a drop in the bucket. People can be real creeps sometimes!

I'm happy these doggies found homes, why couldn't they adopt one of the millions of dogs back home who are homeless? Around 200 or so dogs get euthanized every month in my county alone, because there are no homes for them. It makes no sense to me to import even more dogs, when we can't seem to help the ones who are already here.

...all of whom are rescues. The latest one was found by our sons in August 2012, while they were on a pre-season soccer trip for their school - Carthage College in Kenosha WI. The team was in San Antonio for a week, ans 2 days before they were due to depart, they found an abandoned kitten about a block from their hotel. They took him back to the hotel, got him food, water and a bath. He was so tiny, the cap from a Gatorade bottle sufficed as a water bowl.

They called every no-kill shelter they could find. When no place would take him in, the team members passed the hat and bought the little guy a ticket back to WI. He lived with 5 team members in an off campus rental house until our older son graduated. He spent school breaks with us, and joined us full time last summer while the college grad looked for a job. When son #1 moved out of our house to live with a friend who is allergic to cats, Texas kitty became our #5. When found, he weighed a mere 1 lb 4 oz. He is now a BIG boy, topping the scales at a muscular 14 pounds. Biggest cat we've ever had, and we are crazy about him. His name is Winston.

When stationed in Japan in the Air Force nurse corps, I fell in love with a little kitten found by someone who lived in the same BOQ I did. I brought that cat back with me when I left Japan, and had him for 20 years.

This young Olympian has a big heart, and I salute him.
