(16,296 posts)It has got to be a squirrel. I know it's nothing but a rat with a bushy tail, but damn they are fun to watch.

(12,509 posts)every day for 2 squirrels that would come to the back door. Each would take the cracker out of his hand without fear. He loved his squirrels.
Corny Dad joke: I said, "Dad why are there holes in the screen on the back door?" Dad said: "I screen the squirrels before getting friendly with them."
I'm glad Dad didn't try stand-up comedy for a career.

(28,498 posts)When I was attending a community college in southern California, I played in its orchestra. One weekend, we had the opportunity to go to "music camp" in the mountains surrounding L.A. where we would practice and rehearse.
This camp was used extensively by the school district for a variety of purposes. When I was in sixth grade, for example, all classes went to camp for a week. It was to introduce us urban and suburban kids to nature.
Anyway, it was obvious that over time the squirrels there were spoiled by countless kids with snacks. They were very tame and would eat out of our hands.
One afternoon, I was giving them peanuts-in-the-shell while sitting on a bench when I stopped momentarily and put the remaining peanuts in my pocket. I was admiring the mountains that surrounded the camp when I felt a twitching on my thigh. Startled, I jumped up just as a squirrel jumped down! He was attempting to get into my pocket!
Anyway, he froze as if he wanted to see what I would do next. I laughed and reached into my pocket and gave him another snack.

(10,779 posts)They have no inertia at all! No, really, they don't. They can instantly move their heads from one position to another -- you try that with your massive head! They can go from completely motionless to full speed and back to completely stopped again like a jerky YouTube video. No inertia whatsoever!
Scientists need to study this phenomenon; it could be the solution to our energy crisis.

(4,940 posts)It'd take 3 of 'em to fill one head............and the kitties would get to 'em first.
But they're fun; they like to throw stuff at you at campsites!
