http://www.businessinsider.com/grover-norquist-2016-candidates-2014-3NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. Grover Norquist, the influential conservative who serves as president of Americans for Tax Reform, thinks there are only six Republicans who can win the 2016 Republican nomination for president.
His list, which he told Business Insider in an approximately hour-long interview Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul.
"There are only six people who can credibly run start-to-finish, and any of them could conceivably win the presidency," Norquist said.
"And the reason is, each of those people could raise the money to run campaign all the way through. Each of those people has some name ID."

(45,274 posts)The last incumbent to lose was Bush I, & before that, Carter.
The economy is not exactly booming at least for most people, with an increasing income gap and unemployment that is still intolerably high. The Republicans will do everything they can to crash the middle class, and will then blame the crash on the Democrats.
These are icy waters.

(3,290 posts)Unfortunately, a very scary list to think that any of these nasties could win. I do think that considering the caliber of potential candidates they should consider having Ms. Palin as VP candidate again. That would kind of complete the illustrious group. YECCCHHHHH!

Money is not a problem Republicans have.
Dave and Charlie alone can give their 504c billions.

(6,719 posts)I think they (Republicans) could do well with Huntsman but he cannot survive the viciousness of the far right.
I think anyone not already out there or visible or with name recognition is getting a late start. Hard to imagine someone else suddenly popping up on the scene and making any progress. Some are waiting to be adored and hailed, but I think those are not willing to do the work. Those willing to do the work are already on the job. Sigh.
I have already promised to work both 2014 and 2016 or I'd consider a long cruise!

(50,562 posts)First things first: Republicans in the flyover states will not vote for Piyush Jindal, Nimrata Haley, or anyone else who isn't a Real (read: white and Christian with Anglo-Saxon name) American. Nor will they vote for Ted Cruz because of his Cuban father. They are not nice people over there.
Drop Rand Paul out of the race. Libertarianism won't sell in the big states he needs.
Walker and Christie are known crooks. Unless someone gives their kids a little dog to be named Checkers, crookedness won't sell.
So it is Bush and Perry, either of whom Any Random Democrat can beat.

I'm not a Hillary fan, but her resume is so damned solid. She's smart as hell, connected, will raise big bank, and will almost certainly win.
No way Republicans waste a 2020 player on a sucker's bet. If Hillary wins, the R's will nominate someone too old, too dumb, too crazy, or too tainted to invest in. Perry is dumb, Christie is tainted, Paul is crazy.
Expect one of those three to win the R primary, should Hillary win early.

I'm all for a good horse race: show me a man (or woman) on your team who has some seriously good ideas; you know, a person of substance and character who can deal with the challenges our country faces. I'll listen!
But these are the same sad cookies that crumbled straight out of the bag last time around.
Instead of throwing good money after bad, maybe it's time to figure out what is fundamentally wrong with your "Grand Old Party".
