San Francisco Firefighters Battling 6-Alarm Blaze

A fire at Fourth and China Basin streets in San Francisco this evening has grown to six alarms, a fire dispatcher said.

The blaze near AT&T Park was reported at 4:56 p.m., according to the dispatcher.

The fire is burning at a building under construction across the street from the Strata at Mission Bay apartments, according to a spokeswoman for Sares Regis, which manages that property.

The property that is burning does not belong to the nearby University of California at San Francisco, a UCSF spokeswoman said.

This is what happens when the winds are 60 knots or so:

Grainy VHS from a local television documentary, two parts.

People ran for their lives as wooden three story tenements exploded into flame, one after the other. I was watching from the top of a building on Beacon Hill, closer than many other vantage points but still upwind, and it was horrific.

Just watch how fast the wind was whipping.
