Paul Ryan: Poverty due to
Nothing like a rich white guy talking about poor, lazy minorities, right? Former Republican VP pick and current House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) is facing fallout for his racist comments on the Bill Bennet radio show yesterday. Ryan stated that inner city men werent even thinking about looking for work because they received government assistance. Yup, the stereotypical Lazy Black Man is alive and well in the mind of Paul Ryan. Salon has more:
Citing Charles Murray, the libertarian academic and pundit who has previously argued that poverty is largely a consequence of low IQ and race, Rep. Paul Ryan told right-wing radio host Bill Bennett on Wednesday morning that poverty in America is largely a product of a tailspin of culture, in our inner cities in particular, of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the value and the culture of work. So theres a real culture problem here, Ryan continued, that has to be dealt with.
Perhaps Ryan forgets that most jobs created since 2009 are part-time, minimum-wage, with no benefits. Rep. Barbara Lee called Ryan out on his comments:
In a statement released after news of his interview with Bennett first broke, Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee called Ryans comments a thinly veiled racial attack [that] cannot be tolerated. Lets be clear, Lees statement continues, when Mr. Ryan says inner city, when he says, culture, these are simply code words for what he really means: black. Lee went on to describe Ryans remarks as not only statistically inaccurate, but deeply offensive.
Ryan tried to back away from his comments, absurdly changing the phrase inner city to rural when describing the culture of laziness taht leads to poverty, as Think Progress reports:
In defending his inner city remarks on Wednesday night, Ryan changed his focus to rural poverty, saying, This isnt a race based comment its a breakdown of families, its rural poverty in rural areas, and talking about where poverty exists there are no jobs and we have a breakdown of the family.
Inner city and rural. Wow, arent those opposites? Like freedom is slavery, or war is peace? Ryans Orwellian defense notwithstanding, he has a history of elitist if not overtly racist language targeted at poor Americans. It was just last week that Ryan addressed that clump of conservative cuckoos at CPAC and made the ridiculous comment that free school lunches meant poor parents didnt care about their kids. Notice a pattern here? Raw Story covered the CPAC circus:
[Ryan] told a story of a young boy from a very poor family who received free lunches at school from a government program. He didnt want a free lunch, Ryan insisted. He wanted his own lunch, one in a brown paper bag, just like the other kids. He wanted one, he said, because he knew a kid with a brown paper bag had someone who cared for him. This is what the left does not understand.
Let me get this right - the left doesnt understand why free school lunches are important? Hey Paul, what about the kid whos family is too poor to fill that brown lunch bag with nutritious food? Whats the message to that little boy, huh? Go hungry because youre poor? Because rich white (Neocon) politicians like you keep fighting minimum wage increases, reducing educational funding, encourage the destruction of our manufacturing sector by allowing Big Corporations to outsource American jobs, then give huge tax breaks to these same entities? Then you have the temerity to plant the idea that poor families who rely on school lunch programs dont love their kids.
Well, their fathers are too lazy to work anyway, right? Happily sucking on the government teat rather than seeking meaningful employment. Their kids deserve to starve.
Stay classy, Ryan.

(11,075 posts)Hi ralps. Hello Everyone.
Example #1,453,678 of why being a Democrat is so frustrating: Chris Hayes had Mary Burke(running against Walker in Wisconsin) on his show and he asked her if she would repeal the collective bargaining law. And she wouldn't give him a straight answer!!! He had to ask the question again. Finally, she managed to say that she would try to restore collective bargaining. But she had to have it dragged out of her.

(16,529 posts)Hoping that you're well! Besides the headache you're gonna have, lol! I didn't respond to a fundraising request from Burke, mainly because we have so many local and state and statewide candidates. Fortunately, I didn't hear that tonight from candidates who were present at my meetings.
The interference of Corker, and in the Carnage Assembly, which is how I now refer to the Gen. Assembly, Bo Watson and Gerald McCormick here locally, in the VW plant's vote to unionize has candidates in a long time praising unions! I'm married to a union thug and my 21 year old son is paying union dues while he's working and attending IBEW apprenticeship school. Son received his union thug gear last week...a beenie and a t-shirt that states Union Thug. I'm waiting for my bumper stickers that read I love my union thug!

(16,529 posts)Hoping that everyone is well! I had a county party board meeting tonight, followed by an executive committee meeting! I did meet one of our candidates for U.S. Senate, Terry Adams, and I liked him. Candidates will be in and out of the Women's Convention and I'm looking forward to that!
Hopefully no elbows will be thrown!

(16,529 posts)A movement is afoot, brought up tonight and there will be a 30 day 'make everyone aware' period to amend our county bylaws to include labor, the President of the Chattanooga Area Labor Council, as a member of our Executive Committee...labor will finally have a seat at the table. There's always been a good working relationship. but this is important.
What is one of the union sayings..'Screw us and we multiply'...folks are pissed in a right to work for less state!
