John Boehner, Nancy Pelosi extend invite to Pope Francis

Speaker John Boehner has invited Pope Francis to address a joint session of Congress.

It is an open invitation, the speaker’s office said, and it’s not yet clear when he’ll give the speech on Capitol Hill.

The invitation would put the widely popular Pope Francis in front of both the House and Senate for the first time in history. Republicans and Democrats have gravitated to the pontiff’s inclusive message.

President Barack Obama plans to visit the Vatican during an trip to Europe later in March.
