(585 posts)I've seen it used for extremely trivial stories, like some sports figure making a statement that wasn't even noteworthy, let alone deserving of a "breaking news" label. It's just a way to manipulate viewers into staying tuned.

Patrick saw you on CNN with professional troll Piers Morgan. I was hoping for a sober discussion but it was evident that Piers wanted to troll right from the beginning. I solute you for trying your best to resist his trolling attempts. The other two panel guests were foolish to engage Piers Morgan by answering his trollish leading questions.
But I guess this means you wont be back on CNN for a while
For benefit of other people reading Patrick was on Piers Morgan Live on March 13 as an aviation expert and airline pilot, and did his best to try to stick to the facts.

The Piers Morgan thing didnt go very well. He totally blocked me from the first segment (not a word), and hardly let me talk during the second one, then started spouting on about crying Chinese grandmothers and WHEN WILL GET AN ANSWER! Then it was over.
I actually wore a tie for that abuse.
I was on with Wolf Blitzer, and Richard Quests CNN-I show earlier in the week, plus CNN-I again on Friday. They went more smoothly. I also did two NPR spots, Inside Edition, CBC-TV, Bloomberg TV, Al Jazeera, and a bunch of other stuff.

Er, scratch that earlier message of mine, about appearing on the show Inside Edition.
For the second time I wasted a chunk of my day sitting down for a taping by that show, only for them to NOT use the segment.
Back in October I spent half a day at Kennedy Airport doing a taping about my book with them. It was supposed to air that day, and they DIDNT USE IT.
Now it happened again. This morning I got up early after an extremely hectic day yesterday, with another extremely hectic day on tap for today, because they promised, this time, to run the segment and to mention the book.
Well, once again they DIDNT.
You have no idea how angry this makes me. I was exhausted this morning but I went and did it. And it was a very good interview probably the best Id done all week.
CNNs Erin Burnett show also canceled on me, last minute, after I was already in the studio, on Wednesday afternoon, saying they were going in a different direction
(snip)
Just another reason for me to NOT watch that crap from CNN.

(19,565 posts)At one point if I were someplace walking by a TV with a breaking news banner I'd stop to see what it was, because it usually was something new which took place. Now I've noticed I often just keep going on about my life. If it were a real breaking event I'd have gotten a notice on my phone about it anyway.
I'm not sure those cable news networks are going to survive much longer. Too many people have come up with more reliable, and less irritating ways to replace them.

(36,988 posts)which I didn't find as funny as
the first but they do take a hit at CNN on the absurdity of the breaking news bit.
1. It Foregrounds Media Cliches and Pat Formulas.
When Ron Burgundy and team create ridiculous, over-the-top news features such as "Rip the Lid Off It!," its impossible to ever take a special report or interruption for breaking news uncritically ever again.
2. It (de)humanizes the Production of News.
By calling attention to the actual production process of news and the often-considerable limitations of the people who make media, the Anchorman franchise underscores that news is invented, not discovered.
3. It Eviscerates the Media'a Hero Complex
Far more than critically acclaimed critiques such as Network, Anchorman brilliantly lampoons the self-importance and deranged egos of media stars.
