Usually directed at you with a "what, Little MEEEEEE????" chin tilted down - sort of a cockeyed alleged-Princess-Diana look. The only thing missing is furiously batting eyelashes. I used to work with an individual like that. Chin tilted down, looking up at you with big round blue eyes. Usually you found yourself facing that "me-so-innocent" facial expression when she was about to knife you in the back.

I think somebody told her it was flattering and undoubtedly sexy and photographed well. Sort of a "come hither" thing. It's a head tilt that telegraphs flirting and very subtle, almost passive seduction, especially when you're looking up from under bangs or other hair covering part of your forehead. It's an attempt to look innocent and disarming and harmless and adorable and cute-as-hell. I suspect our little paulie discovered early that this "cute widdle MEEEE" pose with those big blue eyes all wide and round got him stuff. Got him out of trouble. Got him extra candy while trick-or-treating. Got him leniency from his teacher or the principal. Got him girls. Somebody undoubtedly told him he was cute that way, and gushed about those big blue eyes - maybe an auntie or grandma or somebody - when he was a little kid. And he never forgot it. 'Cause he's STILL doing it. And now it's not just grandma letting him lick the cake batter spoon when he's not supposed be spoiling his appetite anymore. Now it's naive, gullible voters, greedy high-roller donors, AND members of the media who he's been able to hornswoggle.

The same individual I described in my other post ALSO had a corollary head tilt, and THAT telegraphed all kinds of subliminal meanings as well. When she was feeling full of herself and about to sashay down the hall to another manager's office where she did a lot of political sucking-up, or felt she had you in her crosshairs and was about to run you out of your job, her chin would be tilted up. She'd be looking at you from on high - an upward-tilted chin makes you look DOWN at whatever is directly in front of you. It subtly suggests an air of superiority, dominance, power, assertion, and one-upmanship. And the way she'd cross her legs with her short skirts and stiletto heels - especially sitting across from some male manager's desk, sorta slam-dunked the message. It was actually quite impressive to watch, frustrating as it was.

w/ under-handed women. It always pains me, as a feminist, to witness such behavior.

However, when Ryan pulls this crap on a national stage it makes me want to fwo up & punch walls.

Good to have you with us! It pains me, too! We women are supposed to be on the same team! NOT sticking targets on each other's backs! We've fought so hard to gain the ground we've gained, and push our gender forward, and level the playing field!!! So hard!!! It just pains me to no end to see so many of the reforms we fought for and marched for and petitioned for and rallied for during the '60s and '70s on or near the ropes. I DO NOT want to - and WILL NOT - go backwards!!! No matter how ardently the bad guys want that!

Btw - your post name reminds me of that Leonard Cohen song "Suzanne" - "...tea and oranges… that come all the way from China…"

Thanks for the welcome, calimary, I've been here since pre-GWB selection, have only recently started posting...

Part of what we're so pissed about, I think, is corporatism, which encourages competition among employees, back-stabbing, & ass-kissing. However, it still relates to feminism, when women treat each other this way at the behest of "The Man".

Yes, it's difficult & painful to see what we fought so long & so hard for cast aside & demeaned by religious, political, & corporate leaders.

Having lived through the 70's marching, chaining myself to fences, being a public advocate for women, I wish I could see young women picking up the mantle & fighting back.

I'm afraid the current economy & workplace environment are prohibitive.

(That doesn't completely explain the meanness, though, does it?)

of layoffs and got another job - a bigger, higher-profile one, at which I heard she made some big glaring error in her on-air reporting one evening and wound up having to part company with the station. I don't know for sure - I didn't watch. She learned a few things, though. When I finally decided to look her up one day, just for fun, she'd made it to another big city and stayed put for several years - until that job dried up.

When I saw sippy cupp on MSNBC (haven't followed her to CNN, I'm afraid), and how the camera used to shoot her from slightly behind, while she sat at the host table in a chair nearest the camera - and you could clearly see her tight short skirts, long legs, and fancy platform stilettos - it reminded me of those bad old days.

And the same bad old tricks, too!

I believed that sort of behavior comes equipped w/ punishment. I've seen the opposite.

My friends & I are older, we're being pushed out of the workforce by the meanies. They seem to thrive; we retire, often early.

Who are my friends? Cops who wouldn't plant drugs, EPA enforcement agents who wanted to enforce, marine biologists who wanted to install govt approved safety standards, teachers who wanted to do more than test, etc.

Paid for college with SS survivor funds and then pretty much went straight into politics. His economic theory seems to be based solely on a rather poorly written work of fiction.

Yet there are people who still listen to him as if he has any clue of what he's talking about.
