What's going to happen to the LGBT community in Crimea once they fall under Russian control?

Is there a way to ensure their safety through UN human rights monitors?

It's open season on the LGBT community in Russia. Anti-gay attacks are increasing:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024685142

Central Station was the target of at least three documented attacks in the past six months — one where armed men sprayed the club's unmarked door with bullets in November, another where malefactors released a harmful gas into the club just weeks later, and a third, allegedly organized by the building management, where a group of men dismantled the club's roof in December. In early January, the club's CEO resigned and formally requested asylum in the U.S.

That former owner, Andrei Lichinsky, told news outlets in January that police refused to respond to any of his 30 complaints about attacks on the club and its patrons, and that he had personally been targeted by the local prosecutor's office and had his car lit on fire, according to the U.K. LGBT outlet PinkNews.

There's no way I could live with that kind of persecution. Just knowing that a crazy bastard could attack me anytime with impunity or the government might come get me and throw me in jail for who I am would drive me mad. I guess I just don't have the strength to deal with that kind of shit. And let's be clear, gay people who endure that shit and are able to survive are some very strong people.

Subsequent to that Ukraine introduced an anti propaganda law that October.

Ukraine Parliament deputies approve law against homosexuality with landslide vote in first reading.

The Ukraine Parliament has voted massively in favor of a new law which would ban ‘propaganda’ about homosexuality.

Within the last hour 289 deputies voted for bill 8711, nobody voted against and just one abstained. Another 60 deputies were absent from the chamber.

The vote today (2 October) had only been announced yesterday, giving LGBT rights campaigners little time to organize against it.

Despite that 20 community activists and campaigners representing various organizations and initiatives gathered to protest against the proposed law.

Maybe that was where Russia got the idea to federalise existing laws in most of their federations.

The Ukrainian Rada passed a law in 2012 that implemented Russian style anti-LGBT legislation, but it was never signed by Yanukovych and didn't become law. The Rada was going to take it up a second time last year, but the protests and everything that has followed sidelined it.

The interim Ukrainian government hasn't made any statements one way or the other as to the laws future, but most of its supporters are still in power. The new president Turchynov has been an open supporter of anti-gay legislation and has openly called homosexuality a "perversion" (believe it or not, he's an anti-gay Evangelical Baptist preacher). These people are NOT pro-equality.

And all the spiteful dismissals of anger about Rick Warren, and the urges to put gay marriage aside for now because it would be a political drag, and a whole list of other things.

But man, as soon as gays will make a good lever, there they are! Long time pals.

Got it.

I create a alot of threads, but thanks for setting me straight.

I've posted about LGBT issues in Russia before, in fact one of my old friends was a member of the LGBT community in Russia and he left to the UK not to long ago.

With all due respect, you know nothing about me and the notion that I'm not allowed to post about this subject is ridiculous. What I think you're doing is questioning my motives and pretending as if I don't really care about LBGT issues.

Welcome to ignore. The only person on my list in a LONG time.

I am questioning your motives. You are posting to rally around more involvement in Ukraine and exploiting the GLBT community to do it. It is transparent and is sad.

Fuck their treatment of the GLBT community and their bigoted laws. It is abhorrent and it is regressive and should be exposed.

The point is, and you willfully ignored it to call me an apologist, that the OP is using this plight to support actions in Ukraine. It is transparent and an attempt to exploit the GBLT community for his political agenda.

I haven't seen the OP, or anyone, call for UN monitors to intervene and and protect GLBTs in any of the dozens of countries where their lives are at risk. Only when it is advantageous to promote a political agenda do the likes of the OP suddenly see it as a serious issue.

It is bullshit, offensive and should be called out.

All they offered were two sentences:

"Is there a way to ensure their safety through UN human rights monitors?

It's open season on the LGBT community in Russia. Anti-gay attacks are increasing"

I don't see advocating support of certain actions. Using your logic, since I have not discussed every single country in the world and their treatment of the GBLT community, I am precluded from discussing it regarding any. Frankly, that is flawed logic and if all of us followed this, I think we would find a lot of mute people.
