Anyone know of a free phone # ID site?

Last edited Wed Mar 19, 2014, 06:10 PM - Edit history (1)

I am getting tons of junk calls lately and have reached the point that I will not answer the phone until I try and look up the caller number. Every site I go to has a come-on that says free but after filling the number, all I get is carrier info. The caller is not listed. They say if I register and pay $XX, I can get the real caller info.

I used to have a site that gave me whatever info I needed and can no longer find it. Are all these Caller ID sites now 'pay'?

I am on my family's 'friends and family' plan and do not want to make the mistake of returning the call from one of these numbers or answering and finding that my kids are picking up the bill for my carelessness.
Thanks for any help. Boy I miss the old days of a land line. I'm not much of a cell phone person.

Edit to add: Googled many of the numbers and have been directed to a list of sites that ask me to fill in the number to be searched...then, for only(the next step) $X, they will give me the name of the person or company. Most initially list the carrier, not the caller. Just trying to find a site that will ID the name for free.
Thanks
PR

If you Google the number, you can usually find sites like whocalledme or whatever, very very useful. djean111 Mar 2014 #5

only landlines can be ID'd, and not even those much of the time.

People post comments on who it is, what the scam is, etc.
Also, whitepages.com is free - just click on reverse phone and type in the phone number. I just tried my own landline phone it it came up with me. Dunno about cell phones, I don't have one.
