A small Westboro contingent stood with their familiar God Hates Fags signs outside a concert by New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde, at the Midland Theater in downtown Kansas City. Forewarned that the Westboros planned to picket the concert, Lorde, (Ella Marija Lani Yelich-OConnor) urged her fans via Twitter to wear rainbow color clothing, and in one tweet she later took down, to kiss a Westboro member of the same sex.
There were no kiss attempts reported, but Lorde fans and local residents did stage a most memorable counter-protest. One large group dwarfed the Westboro gathering, as young, smiling Kansans stood shoulder to shoulder next to the small queue of dour Westboro picketers, holding a large, bright yellow banner with the message: Live Your Life And Be Awesome, that simply overwhelmed the well used hate signs.
But the sign that received the most attention was on the opposite side of the street. It was a message of sympathy to the group on the death of their founder. The banner read: SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.
Megan Coleman, who made the banner, told reporters she thought the group could use some positivity. That may be in line for understatement of the year.
