First of all just spending a lot on social programs doesn't necessarily correlate to the good life - we do need to spend more in the United States, I agree there, but one reason to have a lot of spending on social programs is because your economy is doing poorly and more people are out of work.

One of the charts is countries with the most divorces? Is that good or bad?

The life satisfaction though is probably the most interesting. We are 16 on that chart - but in fairness we are tied with Luxembourg and Ireland. We are tied for 8th, apparently.

They included marriage (chart) as a sign of where things are terrific?

Percentage of Married respondents age 15 and older. Top spots are China and India.

I think I would rather be a single woman in America than married at 15 and living in abject poverty in India.

India and China are the lowest for divorce . . . they are also near the bottom for spending on social safety nets.


Kind of foggy today - but it would seem those marriages are of convenience and once there, economic circumstances keep you trapped forever.
