Depending on you level of education with respect to health insurance plans give yourself between 45 min and about 4 hours. Signing up for options doesn't take long at all if you have the proper info. Maybe 20 min. The time is in looking over all of the plans. Do not rush this part. Educate yourself with the plans. You will be better off for it. Also, there might be differences state by state. I am in Florida.

If you currently are taking prescriptions calculate according to your normal activities.

Don't get scared off by the deductible/ out of pocket max, those basically are for catastrophic events

I have coverage but I went looking around the site last weekend.

It takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour to enter your personal information, and that of any others who are enrolling with you. For that it helps to have your most recent tax return ready. I was able to save data as I went along.

Then you'll need to spend some time browsing the different plans. There's a lot to consider -- the premiums you can afford, the deductible and out-of-pocket costs, whether your preferred doctor and/or hospitals are "in-network," whether you want an HSA-eligible plan, etc. That step took the longest for me.

You'd better hurry, though. The deadline is March 31!
