Five GOP senators put unemployment aid pressure where it belongs: On John Boehner

by Laura Clawson

The five Republican senators involved in working out the Senate's plan to extend emergency unemployment aid do not seem intimidated by House Speaker John Boehner's repeated trashing of the plan. For instance:

“There’s a lot of things that the speaker doesn’t like that we do over here,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska). “What we have out there is a fair proposal.” [...]

“It’s a good compromise that takes care of people who are running out of their checks and does it in a way that is paid for appropriately,” said Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.). [...]

“There’s a concern out there about implementation, I understand that. But it’s been done before, and we’re eager to hear [the House’s] ideas as to how it could be implemented more effectively,” said Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio).

As long as these Republicans and all the Democrats hold firm, the pressure is squarely on Boehner to explain why he's not even allowing a vote on a bill with bipartisan Senate support, or seeking fixes to technical concerns about the bill rather than using them as an excuse to block it entirely. Millions of jobless Americans and their families are waiting.

not publicly. I'm sure the gopers who are protesting are hearing it from their constituents. Boner apparently doesn't care, until he has to.

majority, and if they win the Senate, it will never be granted again to Americans.

Obama has held fast to UEB in two showdowns, and the GOP even threatened default to pass Keystone, personhood and to end the Affordable Care Act.

Obama cannot veto a CR which stands for Contiuing Resolution without default, there is no line item veto available. The GOP have tried numerous times to tie all these regressive things so that the wheeling and dealing behind the scenes was needed.

Harry Reid has been calling them out more directly, as he may see the end of his authority, since they intend to remove him as Senate Majority Leader in November.

The GOP and their media owning compatriots are laying down the groundwork to desensitize the American people to losing all forms of AEB, food assistance, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public education and every program to equalize income and reduce poverty there is.

Stand up in the only place that counts with the ballot, or be used as their doormat and be discarded when of not further use to them. It's up to us, and it ain't that hard.

The senate may have passed a bill to re-start unemployment benefits, but Boehner has the ACE in his hand. He can do nothing and he wins. If his district is overwhelmingly to the right, he has nothing to lose because, like lemmings, they will follow him everywhere. There may be people in his district that are hurt by this, but so what? His re-election is assured. It doesn't matter. He will do nothing. He and the Tea Party ARE the do-nothing congress.
