Not a shocker: Egypt's military chief Sisi quits to run for presidency

In a widely expected announcement, he said on state TV he was appearing "in my military uniform for the last time".

Field Marshal Sisi led the overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in July after mass opposition protests.

Correspondents say he is likely to win the presidency, given his popularity and the lack of any serious rivals.

To his supporters, the 59-year-old former army chief is a saviour who can end the political turmoil dogging Egypt since 2011 when a popular uprising ended Hosni Mubarak's three decades of one-man rule.

The army has ruled Egypt for sixty years and more, and doubtless will continue to do so. The overthrow of Mubarek was not the overthrow of army rule, merely the convincing of the army leadership he could no longer serve as the personal focus of their rule.

However many posts this thread gets, I doubt one will surpass the sagacity of yours. Alas. (not alas that no one will post anything as perspicacious, but alas that what you wrote is so patently true)

Edit: Second question; how many opponents will be suddenly facing charges, along with everyone who voices support for them?

even sadder is that the mass death sentence, meted out with no evidence and no defense, is also quite popular.

Egypt deserves a government that is not controlled by 7th century hate and intolerance.

if the disgraceful, vile condemnation to death of nearly 600, without any defense at all and with no evidence, should demonstrate quite clearly to you.

And the violent reaction to it is not always the best route either. If they are a danger to society, they should be locked up, not killed.

A valid argument could be made about the Morsi government being corrupt. But Sisi's been the dude butchering and imprisoning people. And I really, really doubt that "votes" will matter, if he's running. There's not a lot of variety in how military juntas operate, after all.

And there were no massacres. No mass imprisonments. No bludgeoning in public squares. No political parties outlawed on pain of death.

You're trying to draw equivocation where there is none.
