(55,147 posts)It's a shame we have to fight for what other people take for granted.

(14,947 posts)Always. Good things like civil rights are worth fighting for. It does take away energy and time to move us forward though and that is indeed a shame. If we put our time, talent and treasure together we can do so much, what hurts me is having to fight the same things over and over. Ignorance and greed stands in our way at every turn but we will continue to fight.

(2,805 posts)When "Civil Unions" or any type of contractual agreement where gay persons could achieve the same legal rights as straight persons was starting out or becoming a possible reality, I thought fighting over the word "marriage" was an over-reach. When "activists" in those States rejected civil unions and went for "marriage" I really thought a compromise would be reached and the virulently anti-gay States would settle/compromise and allow Civil Unions. I very soon realized even a decade ago that going for "marriage" was the proper strategy. "Good enough" isn't really Good enough. Equal=Equal.
I credit those with enough foresight or "balls" to say equal=equal and we don't need a new word to define our relationship with changing the whole game. It may take another 15 years for all States to recognize gay marriage but if Civil Unions had been the goal then I think it would have taken much longer. 30 years may seem like a long time for gay marriage to be accepted in all 50 states of the U.S. but if we had gone for Civil Unions first then it would have taken probably 50-60 years before gay people could be seen as equals. It has been remarkably faster than I saw possible.
Too bad several countries beat us to the punch. We are not always the shining beacon of hope despite our proclivity to announce ourselves as such.
