http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/03/27/zimmerman-friend-people-proudly-call-themselves-coonasses/
A friend of a Florida neighborhood watch leader who gunned down an unarmed teen last month says that people shouldnt judge his pal for using a racial epithet because in some parts of the U.S., people proudly call themselves coonasses.
After reviewing a 911 call George Zimmerman made before killing Trayvon Martin, many believe they hear the shooter calling the 17-year-old a fucking coon.
On Monday, MSNBC host Chris Matthews asked longtime Zimmerman friend Joe Oliver if he was surprised that he would have used this kind of language.
To me, its a matter of interpretation of whether he saying coon or goon, Oliver replied. There are a lot of parts of this country where people proudly call themselves coonasses. In Louisiana, in particular.

(12,723 posts)It really doesn't even matter if the word IS goon or punk. Zimmerman is someone who makes value judgements about people he doesn't even fucking know based upon their appearance.

(111,358 posts)Once he exited his vehicle, Zimmerman became one more racist punk with a gun who was spoiling for a fight with someone he considered a racial and social inferior.
Whatever happens to him, he should never be allowed near a firearm for the rest of his rotten life.

I don't know anyone who uses "goon" as a term of endearment or as any term these days --wasn't there, years ago, a movie called The Goonies? And "goon" was a synonym for "thug" in pre-WW2 gangster films...but I haven't seen anyone use it who is under, say, eighty, in that context.
And I don't know anyone who calls themselves, proudly or otherwise "coon asses." That guy needs to get a grip on himself.
Ghost in the Machine
(14,912 posts)Really? I use it quite often to refer to the flunkies and wannabe's of some of the socalled "gangs" around here... as in "don't send your punkass little goon squad to handle your business, grow some balls and come to me face to face like a man".
I also have several friends in Louisiana who proudly call themselves "coonasses"...
Just sayin'...

(135,425 posts)I can't imagine anyone proudly calling themselves coonasses, either.
In any event, goon or coon was not a term of endearment--and that's what this nitwit tried to insist it was.
Yeah, like Zimmerman is hunting this kid like Big Game, and saying "Come hither, my sweet little coon/goon" is a likely scenario.
Whatever he said to the dispatcher about the kid, is wasn't meant as praiseworthy or positive. He was insulting the kid.

(2,437 posts)say "coon". That IS a racial term.
EOTE
(13,409 posts)In Louisiana (pretty much exclusively), you'll find a number of people refer to themselves as "coon asses", always seemed offensive to me and I don't really know the origin of the term. However, Florida is NOT Louisiana and there's no way in hell that Zimmerman was using "coon" as anything other than a smear on someone he didn't even know. These assholes are stretching badly.

(201 posts)I haven't started a fight with any of them and shot and killed anyone. Zimmerman has the law behind him and he will get off scott free. The only thing that matters here is identifying the one who first STARTED the fight. That is the guilty party. Name calling is not the issue. If you are stupid enough to start a fight with someone who has a gun you pay the consequences.

"Name calling is not the issue. If you are stupid enough to start a fight with someone who has a gun you pay the consequences."
How stupid.
George Zimmerman started the fight. It's George Zimmerman's fault, for being STUPID enough to judge somebody because of their appearence, following them, after being told not to, and then shooting an unarmed person to death, and then whining about the blowback, later. And, even if Trayvon Martin did start the fight (which I doubt), that was no reason to shoot him in the chest.
arcane1
(38,613 posts)the 911 tapes make it clear that Zimmerman left his car to go after Martin as he was running away.
Martin was 1,00000% in his rights to defend himself against that.

(201 posts)We don't need to have a trial and learn all the facts. Many of the self professed experts in law who have responded to my post are absolutely sure Zimmerman is guilty. The biggest issue here is that stupid stand your ground law and all it's loopholes. I don't know what happened until all the facts are in and then we may never know for sure the sequence of events.
noiretextatique
(27,275 posts)because the other person who knew exactly what happened is dead. i never said anything about lynching him, and yeah...a fng trial would be great. he needs to be arrested before there can be a trial.

For those who say that term is not in use, it is incorrect. That term has never gone out of vernacular in the South.

(24,721 posts)that refers to born & raised Cajuns. They speak with a heavy "Cajun French" accent handed down from one generation to the next. Perhaps Florida has its own meaning of the word?
Aside from that, Joe Oliver is full of baloney. If Zimmerman was angry enough to continue following Trayvon despite the 911 dispatcher's advice not to, then it's highly unlikely that he was muttering a term of endearment while he was huffing & puffing to catch up with Trayvon.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)Period.
"Coon" is either a raccoon, or a pejorative for a black person in the South. End of discussion. I've lived in the South all of my life, and I lived in Florida. This explanation is so ridiculous on its face, I'm surprised anyone could offer it without falling out of their chair with laughter at spinning such a web of bullshit.
This episode is bad enough without people testing our intelligence with such nonsense.

In any event, you don't call someone else names unless you know them, and depending on the name, you have to know them very, VERY well. I can't imagine calling any of my black acquaintances a "coon" under any circumstances unless I was shopping around for a beatdown. Joe Oliver should probably keep silence and be thought a fool, because the more he talks, the less dispute there is on the subject.

(17,064 posts)The more he spins, the less credible he sounds. Coonass is a cajun, Ive not heard that term used oitside of the upper Gilf Coast. Coon is used all ovdr the south, being either a short form of raccoon, or a perjurative for a black... although its use as a perjurative is a lttle archaic. Goon is used in the old gangster movies, also as reference to a desigmated fighter on a hocky team. Dont think either are used much any more. Oli ers spin is laughable.
