How could we possibly benefit from making this up?
does anyone know the answer to this?

(2,442 posts)They KNOW global warming is real, but their strategy is to just deny it, because money trumps everything.

(38,506 posts)A lot of the deniers are actually looking forward to Armageddon. They want the world to end. That's why they don't want to do anything to preserve our place in it.

(7,904 posts)They can not function nor succeed in the world as it is, so they dream of a fantasy world where the limited skills they have will supposedly allow them to reign supreme.
They wouldn't though. They would fail as miserably in that imaginary world as they do this one.

(11,804 posts)So we crafted this hoax which will give us the power to enact vast environmental laws. Businesses will not successfully comply with these vast environmental laws, so we will have to regrettably nationalize all the businesses in order to save the planet. One's we've transitioned from a free market economy to a command economy it's only a matter of time before we beef up the national security apparatus and use it to squash any dissidents.
It is a bit crazy and paranoid.

(24,692 posts)Ike said that opponents of trade unions were "fools," a fitting description of opponents of the Employee Free Choice Act. He called opponents of Social Security "stupid," also an apt description of those who today are trying to destroy not only Social Security, but also Medicare, Medicaid and health care reform.
Rather than opposing government health programs, Ike supported and signed into law the Kerr-Mills Act, legislation that provided for government payment of medical bills for senior citizens. Kerr-Mills, a forerunner of Medicare, was means-tested and covered 70 percent of seniors.
Ike believed that the way to balance the budget was to tax the rich. The wealthiest paid a top marginal tax rate of 91 percent (The effective rate, 48 percent, was higher than the current top marginal rate). The tax rate for capital gains was also 91 percent; the rate for gift and estate taxes was 77 percent. Many current Republicans call for ending all corporate taxes.

As with cap-and-trade, I think the GOP members must need constant reminding of which policies they are consistent about and which they have reversed over time. It must be confusing at times to be a republican.
Of course, Ike was a popular general from his WWII fame so he did not have to toe the republican line and cow-tow to their hardliners and super-conservative fund-raising titans.

(14,400 posts)RWNJ who mind you is about as bright as a stunned goat the entire global warming conspiracy is designed to enrich academics with endless Government funding. Anybody that's ever been or knows an actual academic and knows how much money they make usually starts laughing at this point.
Some of the more extreme RWNJ's, those who's intelligence can most easily be compared to a pithed frog, carry this argument further and seem to think that enriching these academics is the just the first step. The overarching goal of the massive conspiracy, that numbers thousands of individuals is to produce the first working One World Marxist Government.

People are more willing to accept things that fit in with their current thinking. Why do people believe weird things... well

The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)Back in the early 80's when I was going to a pentecostal church and into all sorts of religious stuff the whole thing was explained by a traveling preacher (named Bobby Rich IIRC but it was a long time ago and I was like 14/15).
Towards the end times people would shun god and turn to things like nature (as in old biblical times). Fears over harming mother nature would lead people to see mankind in charge of things. Telling us that the earth is suffering and we will all die if we don't make changes will lead to new laws and new methods to control people.
Since this would be something global and seem to make sense people all over the world would be a part of it. This, and other things, would lead people to accept a one world government. The worship of Gaia would make a come back and people would put them and their powers over god.
Saving the planet would be a cornerstone in the building of a one world leader (aka anti-christ). God would not be seen as in control and this new leader would not only bring peace in a time of conflict but help to heal the wounds of 'mother earth'. People would turn from the father to the mother (ala the Catholic church and such).
He also said TV's would be capable of watching us when we watched them and some other things.
Just google climate change and anti-christ and you will probably find similar things

I suspect that the benefit for the naysayers is the warm, safe, womb-like cocoon of delusion. We do not benefit from their delusions.
