(39,215 posts)Internet Explorer. Supposedly I am not vulnerable now but what is happening is that everything I open seems to be staying open at the bottom of my desk top. After trying to get on DU all day even with the new url that Skinner suggested I was unsuccessful. Then as I was going to close down I saw those icons at the bottom of the page - I closed all of them and just on a lark decided to go back and link with DU again. It worked. And today I tried the same thing and again I am here with not trouble. I have Century Link and went in to ask them for help but they had no suggestions.
I am adding this because it may help us figure out this problem ourselves.

(3,539 posts)I am also on CenturyLink / Win 7 / IE11. (2 PCs)
IE has recently been updated by uSoft.
I am seeing no abnormal Icons but what you saw may help.
Thanks.

(3,539 posts)I am a CenturyLink account. Since last Friday DU has been more NOT there than there.
Problem seen on more than 1 PC.
We just get to Waiting for Democ...............
That's the end of it. Not loading slow, not loading at all.
All other pages work fine and can stream video from either Amazon or Hulu at 720p no problem.
Unless you have the misfortune of having to call CenturyLink customer support (for anything) over all the availability and speed are first rate.
Haven't been able to follow this (or much anything else here) and was glad to see this OP.
If this is a known problem I would gladly help if I can, traces, hugs, even a dreaded phone call to CentryLink.
Hoping this appends.

(37,457 posts)Many are complaining about CenturyLink and Skinner is fed up. Hence this gesture of kindness for Skinner.

(3,539 posts)unless you count Comcast.
How good is Comcast in this area,
Bad as their customer service is CenturyLink beats Comcast hands down. No comparison.

(60,010 posts)there is ONE comment about Century link on the first page of ATA.one would have search many pages of ATA to find your refrence, cause the pages fill up fast with questions.
It would be a lot more helpful if you just summed up what the problem is, in this thread.
I have no clue what is going on.
Apparently an isp problem?
steve2470
(37,457 posts)That's it in a nutshell. People on CenturyLink can't get on DU easily. I guess I take for granted all this stuff, since I'm such a geek.

(8,175 posts)But Centurylink may not be the only ISP affected.
For those who are having trouble getting in, try my trick. I can always get in by googling why won't democratic underground load...that brings up links to threads here regarding the problem. One of those links always gets me in, and then I can go to the home page or most places. Once inside, not all links work, but you can hit back and try another one and just skip the problem threads or links.
Every now and then I can get in the right way, but no matter how I get in, the home page never finishes loading. That doesn't stop me from reading and posting. This is seriously getting old, but I'm so glad I'm not Skinner or Elan.
Here is your hug Skinner and one for Elan too

(9,249 posts)(but I am waiting just a bit longer until I move)
It used to Qwest, and CenturyLink bought/took them over a few years ago.
I used to love Qwest. Things have really gone downhill (and gotten MUCH more expensive) since then.

Big hug to the guys and bah to Centurylink.

Really frustrating cause intra-site DU links don't always work.

(1,333 posts)and I have had a very difficult time accessing DU from my home computer. Every once in a while it goes through but the other 90% of the time, the page wouldn't load.
Sucks that I can only access DU with public wifi

(3 posts)For the last week or so, my access to DU has been very intermittent and from what I can gather, I'm not the only one with the issues. I'm using Century Link fiber optic and trying to access through a desk top hooked up directly to the modem/wifi router and 2 wifi connected ipads. My browser on the pc is the latest version of Firefox which updated about the same time as when the issues started, but since I'm using Safari on the ipads, I didn't think that was the issue. I was ready to call CL to see if they could assist, but I had just installed a new desktop pc, hooked up directly to the same modem/router, and I was able to access DU there without a hitch. I decided to try rebooting the modem through the pc, and since I did that, everything's been back to normal.
I can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, but you might give it a try.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)they had me reboot my modem. It didn't help. But because this is intermittent, it makes it really hard to pin down, other than a lot of CL customers are affected.

(37,457 posts)Our ISP is conducting emergency maintenance tonight during a window which beings at 11PM ET and ends at 1AM ET. During this window, they will "reconfigure BGP routes to avoid latency and dropped packets caused by a saturated link on the Qwest/CenturyLink network."
Between 11PM and 1AM ET, all visitors (not just those on Qwest or CenturyLink) may experience issues connecting to DU.
Our ISP expects the maintenance to take approximately 20 minutes, although they reserve the entire two-hour window for testing and verification.
Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, and thanks for your patience while we work to resolve this issue. We hope this will solve the connection problems that many members have been experiencing since last week.
PS. If you do experience any difficulty getting on DU tonight, feel free to check out www.discussionist.com
