Detroit teacher who used broomstick to break up fight gets job back

DETROIT, MI -- A teacher who was fired after using a broomstick in an attempt to break up a classroom fight last month has been reinstated, according to a spokesperson for the Education Achievement Authority.

Pershing High School teacher Tiffani Eaton tried to stop a frenzied fight between two teenagers April 30 in an incident caught on cellphone video.

The footage showed the teacher frantically trying to stop the separate the two students, at one point swatting one of the boys with a broomstick before the two were finally restrained, apparently by classmates.

The EAA -- which was formed in 2012 as a state-run reform district established with the takeover of 15 low-performing Detroit schools -- suspended the two students and dismissed the teacher after the incident.
