I have for quite a few years assessed them as a defunct party for a Democracy. They will slowly die off or if our government continues on it's trend of corruption and oligarchy, it is we Dems that will die off, after all we are a Democratic party.

even though I'd love to be able to. The first has happened but we have at least two elections to go before the the next two can be realized.

lowly congress-critters (enough of them though gerrymandering) can fully stymie the most progressive of presidents' agendas

and of course then qwe always have the lifetime appointments of key judges scattered all across the US

and then there is the big kahuna..SCOTUS

Sadly, we did not crush them when we had the chance. There was a brief moment in time when we had them on their backs (early 2009)..when our newly minted pols had high approval ratings and could have pretty much done what was desperately needed to correct the voting issues we suffer from now. They could have passed as wide-ranging set of corrective measures for standardized ballots for offices that result in a DC job, a grandfathering-in of ALL who have previously voted that would have exempted them from ALL NEW state measures to prevent them from voting..
and yes, we could have even mandated that any state that slaps new restrictions that require "new" ID, would also have to provide them FREE OF CHARGE to any who needed them.

We could have also ELIMINATED THE FILIBUSTER (in any form)..killed the blue slip rule, and then set out to roll over the weakened republicans.

but we did not.. we frittered away any good will we had by trying to "play nice" with vipers.

You don't need a figurehead to be a national party. There is still plenty of mayhem to be caused. But I agree they are diminishing in strength and will someday be unrecognizable.

The repukes have effective control of congress, nothing passes without their ok.
The repukes have effective control of the Supreme Court, and are rewriting our laws to solidify their power.
The repukes have effective control of a majority of states, and have gerrymandered them to make it very hard to remove them.

The USA hasn't voted in Democrats to the Presidency for 4 straight times since FDR/Truman. Not even 3 straight cycles. The populace loves 'change' at the top (in CONgress, not so much) and will vote to achieve 'change'. It doesn't matter if it's 2008, 2000, 1992, 1968, 1952....

Wouldn't get too sanguine about the future.

and keep a strong majority in the senate. There is really not much help in having the repub congress block and sabotage our Dem presidents.

Then we heard it again, only about the Democrats, after McGovern got clobbered in 1972.

In each case, the party that had suffered a blowout loss came back to win the Presidency in the very next election.

In the past, there have been long periods of domination by one party -- from the Civil War until the Depression by the Republicans (only two Democrats elected), and from then through 1964 by the Democrats (only one Republican elected). Since then, however, it's been more mixed. Neither party has held the Presidency for more than two terms in a row except for Reagan-Reagan-Bush41 in 1980 through 1988 (although with an asterisk for 2000 which would have given the Democrats a similar three-peat except for, shall we say, unusual circumstances).

Now, suddenly, the Democrats are guaranteed six wins in a row? Not even FDR and Truman pulled that off. They combined for only five in a row even after the Republicans presided over an economic disaster that dwarfs the 2008 recession.

Demography and the Electoral College look good for us right now. We have some grounds for cautious optimism. I wouldn't go any stronger than that.
