The Afghan girls who live as boys

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15262680

For economic and social reasons, many Afghan parents want to have a son. This preference has led to some of them practising the long-standing tradition of Bacha Posh - disguising girls as boys.

Fariba Majid, the head of the Women's Rights Department in the northern province of Balkh, used to go by the boy's name Wahid.

Sorry about the choppy excerpt. Love one-sentence paragraphs. Always good. I would have used the first few 'paragraphs' but they were personal story type things and not so illustrative of anything in particular. IMO a very interesting article about something I previously knew nothing about.

BBC policy on fair use is that about 300 words of text can be quoted from a BBC only source as long as it is fully attributed and a link back is included.

If the material is sourced from elsewhere (eg Reuters) then the rules of that company apply.
