The aura is called "Politics".
Racial politics, gun ownership politics, crime politics and class politics. An aura that any young black male intrinsically lacks on practically any street in America.
Those who are invested in maintaining the status quo for the privileged class have decided that it's in their best interest to defend Zimmerman, even if they have to smear Trayvon Martin in the process.
For the Right Wing, Zimmerman is a symbol that they can all rally around. He's the living embodiment of their wildest wet dreams, he actually has blood on his hands.
The blood of someone that they can twist into whom they think deserved to die as an example to all the other uppity negroes.

(12,022 posts)Whether it's money, old boy friendships, or something darker (CIA? Mob ties?), this shooter has been protected from all angles.

(94,572 posts)Politics is certainly involved, but at this point it isn't a Right Wing pro-gun conspiracy that's protecting him; it's the fact that so many agencies screwed up on this, they're going to make sure every t is crossed and i is dotted before making a (likely) decision on an arrest.

(73,631 posts)You're right. The obvious incompetence of the Sanford PD was the worst actor, and now they're playing CYA with a child killer as their pawn.
But now it's much bigger than the cops and the DA who let him slide.
As his lack of an arrest is allowed to drag on, the wingers will not let any opportunities go to waste.
Any port in a storm.

(17,064 posts)The original investigation was slipshod, either by intent or incompetence. I believe they are trying to get it right this time. Lets give them a little time to be thorough... If they fuck it up again thats the time to give them bloody hell.

(36,063 posts)My guess is the Sanford PD is being investigated and won't be making any arrest in this case.
As high profile as it has become, investigators from the State and Federal gov't are probably going to sift through things slowly and carefully before acting.

(34,845 posts)Z's daddy was a magistrate -not a judge- in Virginia -not Florida.
Unless someone has some inside knowledge of his relationship to Sanford, I don't think we can make any assumptions.

(10,479 posts)handcuffs I assumed he was under arrest then. If the PD considered him under arrest what happened that changed that? Was it the police chief, DA or something else? If this is where the "majority" overturned the "minority"? It stinks to high heaven!
EFerrari
(163,986 posts)and I think that changes their liability.
The night of GZ's "detention", the Sanford police chief and the state's attorney's office seem to have both stepped in and did that against the recommendation of the lead investigator.

(8,434 posts)Zimmermann's defense will use that law as a defense, but the prosecution will be charging him with murder or at least manslaughter. For that there is no statute of limitations.

(12,022 posts)From news reports, we know that he is:
-- A Vietnam Vet.
-- A Virginia magistrate from 2000 - 2006
-- Has a wife of Pervuian descent.
What else do we know about him? What was his education? What was his job between the Vietnam war and 2000? Anyone in Virginia know?

(28,936 posts)not influenced by public pressure. It will hold more weight if a week or two go by before an arrest is made rather than to just do it right away since the public is outraged.

(1,068 posts)Well, not really street justice.
What we SHOULD be doing is tying Zimmerman's name with EVERY republican running for office, EVERYWHERE.
Romney should never be mentioned in ANY context without Zimmerman's name involved.
Rush Limbaugh's name should never be mentioned in ANY context without Zimmerman's name involved.
Sarah Palin's name should never be mentioned in ANY context without Zimmerman's name involved.
George Bush's, Dick Cheney's, and Ronald Reagan's name should never be mentioned in ANY context without Zimmerman's name involved.
Finally, John Roberts', Clarence Thomas', Anonin Scalia's, and Alito's name should never be mentioned in ANY context without Zimmerman's name involved.
The bottom line: We must ALWAYS tie the republicans with Zimmerman. Every time. Every article. Every way.
We must treat this as a political opportunity and take advantage of it all we can to rub it in the face of the GOP.

(20,176 posts)I'd be more interested it making sure to tie ALEC to Zimmerman. Let's make ALEC so toxic that our legislators refuse to take their phone calls.

(57,936 posts)The Stand Your Ground law is typical, Republican think-no-further-than-the-tip-of-my-nose, but outside of that, what does this have to do with partisan politics? We don't yet know who decided to bring no charges right after the homicide. What we think we "know" is really just conjecture and speculation.
