(4,452 posts)I got a bike because my DL was revoked and I don't feel like investing thousands of dollars I don't have to fight it.
The problem is I don't feel safe out there with today's drivers.
Having spent my entire working life on the road and being a motorsports enthusiast, I take driving seriously. Probably more serious than most. I've seen a serious degradation of peoples driving skills and or their attention to what's going on around them.
I live in a pretty rural area and there's not much traffic and not any real shoulder so even the two or three miles I would ride. I've tried mirrors but they don't give a wide enough view to assess the risk. The next choice is a video system, and I have the basic equipment for it but have to engineer the mounting and power systems.
Beyond that, my60+ y/o legs are a bit under their capabilities since I spend most of my time surgically attached to my computer.

(27,247 posts)I used to take interstate bicycle trips when I was younger. I visited every Mississippi River state, plus Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado. You're in for a real treat when you get to the Great Plains.
