40 Percent of Russian Girls Lose Virginity Before Reaching Age of Consent

Scientists at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences have expressed concern after a study showed an increasing number of females are losing their virginity at a younger age.

More than 40 percent of girls have already lost their virginity by the age of 15 — a year younger than the legal age of consent in Russia — researchers said in a study titled "Medical and Social Problems of Raising Teenagers," Izvestia reported Monday.

In 1995, that figure stood at 30 percent.

Among 650 17-year-olds surveyed in the suburbs of Moscow, not a single virgin was found, the study showed.

1. I doubt you would find very many 17 year old virgins anywhere.

That being said, the concern about girls/virginity is a construct from the dark ages. What is the common age of Russian boys losing their virginity and why doesn't it produce the same concern?

society likes to act like most are gettin it on at 13. never been. isnt now. as a matter of fact, last couple years the age has risen. a tad. but is it only a few percentage, between boy and girl. like 17.2 and 17.4... or something.

requires a certain level of maturity. I would never in a million years tell a girl that her virginity is a commodity, which is what this medieval article is implying.

12. My issue is with the fact that these girls are still children.

If they're having sex with other children that's not as big of a concern as adult men exploiting them. Just have to ensure education and birth control are available.

However, given the situation there with respect to human trafficking, it bears further examination. The girls who are trafficked are sometimes groomed first by older men who are paid a finders fee by pimps in other countries.

9. Maybe it's just a general symptom of modern russian culture.

For example: alcohol abuse

I've even read that so many russian women are looking for foreign husbands because they don't want a drunkard.

•Fewer than 2% of adolescents have had sex by the time they reach their 12th birthday. But adolescence is a time of rapid change. Only 16% of teens have had sex by age 15, compared with one-third of those aged 16, nearly half (48%) of those aged 17, 61% of 18-year-olds and 71% of 19-year-olds.[1] There is little difference by gender in the timing of first sex.

•On average, young people have sex for the first time at about age 17, [2] but they do not marry until their mid-20s.[3] This means that young adults may be at increased risk for unintended pregnancy and STIs for nearly a decade or longer.

•Teens are waiting longer to have sex than they did in the recent past. In 2006–2008, some 11% of never-married females aged 15–19 and 14% of never-married males in that age-group had had sex before age 15, compared with 19% and 21%, respectively, in 1995.[1]

•In 2006–2010, the most common reason that sexually inexperienced teens gave for not having had sex was that it was “against religion or morals" (38% among females and 31% among males). The second and third most common reasons for females were “don’t want to get pregnant" and “haven’t found the right person yet."[4]
