What is your personal opinion of Rush Limbaugh?

Personally, I think he is a bit of a slow-thinker. A little dim-witted, in my opinion.

But why these folks pay him $40-50 million (or more) per year if he was not effective at what he does?

He is no great thinker. Just ask the ditto heads for a couple of great examples of Rush's brilliance and you will be hard-pressed to get a response.

Personally, I have a difficult time giving credibility to anyone who went for years and did not vote at all.

But he found his niche. He sold himself as the voice of conservatism at the golden microphone of EIB or ICBM or whatever it is.

Most of the time, Rush is a pig. He is a racist. He is sexist. He is not funny. His entire agenda is to sell conservatism as the majority voice in this country. He is a little bit like the rooster that crows in the morning and then the sun comes up. He is sure that his crowing was the reason for the sunrise.

But, as a friend noted, when Rush dies, there will be no need to bury him in a normal casket. Just give him an enema and bury him in a shoebox...

10. He's a classic bully.

He's ridiculed the physical appearance of children of political leaders whom he opposes. He's on record as having publicly ridiculed Chelsey Clinton's and Amy Carter's looks. Of course, never mind that he's not so great in the looks department himself. (I won't make any snide comments in that regard.) He's also ridiculed the victims of the Catholic pedophile priests for daring to organize for the purpose of seeking justice. What an incredible lack of empathy! Unless I'm mistaken, he was a typical bully when he was a kid. I read somewhere (might have actually been an admission on his part) that he once drenched Trick-or-Treaters with water from an upstairs window.

As far as describing his negative personality quirks, this is only (to use the tired, old cliche) the tip of the iceberg. I listened to his show for a few years during the Clinton administration, but eventually got bored and stopped listening. That was nearly two decades ago.

I'm going to take the liberty to point out an amazing example of viciousness on the part of another RW radio talk show host; namely, Michael Savage. He actually denounced Betty Ford for sobbing at her husband's public funeral instead of keeping a stiff upper lip! I had been listening to him as a form of entertainment, but that particular sorry episode was the proverbial last straw for me. People who put others down for the way they grieve over the loss of a loved one are utterly despicable!

16. I don't think he's dumb per se

I think he's found a niche - he tapped into something that a certain segment of society wants and has played it for all it's worth. That said, he's really a reagan republican, and despite their protestations to the contrary, today's tea-partiers are more extreme than reagan. And that's in part why he's on his way out - he can't keep up the shtick anymore - and his attempts to do so have pretty much hurt him - particularly that "slut" comment. I don't know exactly why that one hurt him so badly; back in the 90s he told a black caller to "take a bone out of his nose" and call him back, and that didn't seem to finish him.

I also note that he pays lip service to social issues, but really comes alive talking about economic issues. He's basically a libertine in his personal life, and doesn't really connect with people on religion or social issues ( but does a really good job at faking it). I think it goes back to his childhood where he grew up in a privileged family in the midwest and learned to look down on the local plebes, while resenting both Los Angeles and New York. So he speaks the language of resentment while still basically looking down his nose at everybody.

He also stated that anybody who is a proud democrat is a liberal extremist.

I was done thinking about him or anything he said in about maybe 1991. Has he said anything of note since then which he hand't already said? Didn't everyone pretty much know how he thinks by then?

The exception would be the Donovan McNabb thing. I did get upset about that.
