(19,964 posts)Let me extend to you an invitation to Appalachian Group, so you won't feel so isolated. You have friends and allies who will support you and understand it can be tough. But you are not alone!

(641 posts)John Kerry held a rally in Columbus. It was attended by thousands of cheering and happy people. I was convinced that he was going to carry Ohio. Then the morning of the election Karl Rove secretly scheduled a Bush rally in Columbus that was heavily covered by the national media but hardly any living humans physically turned out for it. Evidently the last-minute push was enough to sway undecided voters and with the help of the devious Ken Blackwell...well, you know the rest of the story.

(2,795 posts)But not like what you're experiencing. So far none of my kids have been shunned or picked on because of politics. My oldest boy is no longer friends with a nutjub teabagger offspring. Teabagger's choosing. He can't be friends with anyone who isn't a republican/libertarian. This kid was always annoying. Talking politics all of the time and tax cuts when they were 8yrs old at the lunch table. No 8yr old boy wants to talk politics and tax cuts, they wanted to talk Pokemon and sports.

(21,020 posts)I'm still hoping for a little more sanity over the Casino thing out here in Western Mass (I'm for it but even though Springfield voters said they want it, some people still want to block it without laying out a rational and workable plan for improving the economy without it).
Also, I'd like to see the Medical Marijuana bill just morph into full legalization.
But yeah, I've lived here for 61 years and I love it.

(34,589 posts)I've heard cops say it's because they don't want to screw up someone's life over something so stupid. (Another reason to love Mass - most cops really want to do the right thing.)
Legal weed will be great, but it's effectively close to legal now

(6,719 posts)Painful when the divisiveness hits children. If you can make a change, do it. Hard to leave what you have worked for in the place where you are now. I grew up in southern Ohio and we cared about climbing trees and Ohio State football and riding our bikes. I moved several years ago into a senior mobile home park where everyone watched FN. I dashed out and found a local Dem club and volunteered there and several other places where I found safe friends. Hoping for the best.

This is ongoing, this horizontal hostility toward "enemies one can scapegoat," and reflects the big 70 - 30 education divide, as well.
