Heads up Massachusetts people.
PRESIDENT AT DCU CENTER ON WEDNESDAY
WORCESTER Police worked through the weekend, meeting with the U.S. Secret Service, to finalize a security detail for President Barack Obama's visit to the city.
With Air Force One expected to touch down Wednesday at Worcester Regional Airport, police are expecting traffic to be messy as the president heads to the DCU Center for Worcester Technical High School's graduation. Mr. Obama is the commencement speaker at the graduation, scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
"We are working with Secret Service to formulate plans for the routes the motorcade will take to the DCU Center," Police Chief Gary J. Gemme said. "It is our understanding that Air Force One will land at Worcester Regional Airport but everything is fluid based on the president's schedule."

(60,536 posts)it showed the Boston/Cambridge area as huge mammoth cities. Everything to the west of it (except California), to the North and South, was ID'd as provinces of Boston/Cambridge. I remember when we lived in Boston, journeying to Concord was seen as heavy duty travelling. LOL. Concord is less than 45 minutes away by car...but Rt 2 through Cambridge to Concord is horrendous. The State is widening Rt 2 out in the Concord area, hopefully that will reduce the mammoth traffic jams

(8,173 posts)definitely is like the boonies to me
I did not know they were widening Rte 2. I used to travel Rte 2 to work in Cambridge for years but I'd take back roads and get on in Lincoln.

(1,092 posts)how does one get the pronunciation of that city to come out as "Wooster"? or "Woosta""?
-
just always puzzled me. thanks for your time
DonViejo
(60,536 posts)otherwise, it's Wooster. We specialize in pronouncing the names of our Cities much differently than they are spelled, e.g., Leominster (Le-mon-stir), Peabody (Pea-biddy), Amherst (the H is silent in MA, vocalized though in New Hampshire)

(28,581 posts)Gloucester, Haverhill, Peabody, Leominster.... and probably a dozen more that baffle newcomers.

(60,536 posts)Non-MA folks always try to pronounce Worcester like the sauce, without the "shire" added. And the mispronunciation of Gloucetser is always fun too. LOL. It's pronounced Gla-stir.

the question has been in my mind for about 50 years now , ever since I saw a Worcestershire sauce bottle.

Took me a while when people would say "woostashir" sauce, I wondered what they were talking about.
