Oil sands players share info on how to hurry up Mother Nature

Color me skeptical...

When great minds think alike, far greater things can happen. That's the thinking behind COSIA (Canadian Oil Sands Innovation Alliance) – a consortium initiated by senior leaders among 13 energy operators that account for more than 90% of Alberta's oil sands production.

COSIA provides a collaborative venue for research and technology-rich companies to share successful practices in environmental-performance improvement in four key environmental priority areas (EPAs): land, water, tailings and greenhouse gases, explains the organization's CEO, Dan Wicklum.

The rationale is simple: where nature might take decades, centuries or even longer to restore land to its original state, a collective sharing of environmental innovation efforts can potentially mimic nature's course in a mere fraction of the time.

"We don't have a policy or communications mandate," Mr. Wicklum says. "You won't see us at tech conferences or on billboards. What we do offer is a framework for companies to launch projects and share results of their research so members can leverage the efforts and investments of others."
