so.... Sonia Sotomayer is - according to you - a traitor to her gender because she's a Catholic, and Hillary Clinton is diseased because she has a religion
Yet, here you are.
Why is that?

(17,621 posts)After a five-year stint as a Catholic! Scott Hahn persuaded me to try Catholicism, but it didn't entirely take.
There is much good in the Catholic church, despite what you may read around here. I think of my experience as an amicable divorce.

(55,745 posts)It's basically the same for Buddhists and for Hindus and for Muslims and for Zoroastrians and for every form of organized religion: "Treat others as you would like to be treated" and everything else will be OK.
PS: My wife got me back in the Church. I'm, ah, eternally grateful.

There is a lot of freedom of the pulpit in Methodist churches, and what goes on in each congregation depends on the congregation and the pastor.
I've seen some crazy Methodists and some very nice ones.
Apparently, you've mostly seen the latter, but I've seen too many of the former. Sorry.
It's not Hillary's Methodism that is troubling to some of us, though, but her association with this "Family" or "Fellowship" group. It or they sound more like the crazies that I knew and still know in the UMC. You know, the ones that are the less agreeable, to DUers, and are the source of the current serious problem in the UMC that may lead to schism. You may not see this in your congregation, but my contacts tell me that the problem is very serious.
What many of us here want is for Hillary to explain her association not with the UMC, but with the "Family" and/or "Fellowship."

(62,444 posts)Are you suggesting there is a madness to their Method?
amandabeech
(9,893 posts)The Methodists who post here on DU are probably in progressive congregations in and around Northeastern, Midwestern and West Coast large and maybe medium sized cities. However, those congregations are in the minority. The majority of congregations are in small cities and rural areas, and often in the South or conservative West.
"W" converted to Methodist church from the Episcopalian church when he married Laura. He's born again and thinks that God told him to invade Iraq, basically. There are plenty like him among Methodists in many parts of the country, despite the welcoming, happy language on the official United Methodist website.
The Methodist church in this discussion refers to the United Methodist Church. The Methodist church in the US split into northern and southern churches over the issue of slavery before the Civil War. It did not unite until the early 1900s. Since then, it has also brought in various Brethern, Evangelical and other conservative groups in an effort to be everything to everyone. Now, the southern branch and the conservative branches are the majority. The UMC now may be veering toward schism over LGBT issues and in some cases, immigration. I don't know which group will be the first to leave, because those that stay with the UMC will probably end up with the property and money.
So yes, there is a madness to some of the Methods.

(29,149 posts)As with the Baptists, there were disputes between northern and southern congregations over the issue of slavery. There was a schism among the over the issue in the years before the Civil War, and the southern congregations left to form their own organization. This was in the organization known as the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the 20th century, the northern factions and the southern factions reunited and eventually (with some other mergers) came to be known as the United Methodist Church.

(17,114 posts)Methodists are wonderful, and I didn't even know about the underground railroad. I'm a Presbyterian, and we have very liberal social principals as well. In fact, the pamphlet I received from them when I first moved to town was DECIDEDLY to the left of Hillary and President Obama. Shh... I guess we're not supposed to mention that. The Methodist church in my town cooks and serves a free hot meal for anyone who needs it nightly. Love them.

(25,598 posts)What's the big deal. The only Methodist joke I can remember: What's the difference between a Baptist and a Methodist? The Methodist will say hello to you in the liquor store.
Brigid
(17,621 posts)Methodists and Baptists are a little iffy on that. Both did a lot to bring about Prohibition.
betsuni
(25,598 posts)instead of Methodists. I grew up around Lutherans who looked both ways before going into the liquor store just in case there was anyone they knew who might see them and tell someone and then rumors might start and people would think you're common trash with a backyard full of empty gin bottles, so better safe than sorry. My favorite Lutheran joke: What do you get when you cross a Lutheran with a Zen Buddhist? Someone who sits for hours worrying about nothing.

(45,319 posts)actually 'hate' for Methodists?
I am very familiar with two Methodist congregations, both of which embraced the LGBT community many years ago without hesitation, when needed most in fact. Wonderful people.
Hillary opposed my rights until last year. I see the difference. Do you?

It must be rough going through life with so much bitterness.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)That's why 'they' go nuts, as you put it. It is natural to speak out against a person who says you are demonic, attacking God, a threat to children and all the other hateful bullshit Francis says. He's a bigot. And those of you who promote him do so with a huge lack of honesty. It's sad to see how low people go to defend an anti gay hate monger who says abortion is a horrific murder. A guy who sends his regards to the Pro Life movement SHOULD get push back on a Democratic site.
You expect LGBT people to sit and accept the trash talk of your hate preacher. That's not going to happen.
