"Spoiler Alert" - 13 fucking keystrokes, yet apparently a request ...

to type them when disclosing athletic contest results, (not declarations of war or other imminent disaster), signifies the end of the internet as a viable news source. And while those 13 keystrokes would appear to be too much for some, those same posters have no issue whatsoever with taking time to issue paragraphs of prose insisting that people who for work reasons, or whatever-the-fuck reasons, can't view an event live but would still prefer to view it without knowing the final outcome should go piss up a rope. Because ... FREEDOM ... or something.
Well, shit. If it means that much to you, go for it. The fact that Dick Cheney walks freely among us, and Michelle Bachmann is allowed in public off-leash, and Ann Coulter gets paid to say the shit she says is proof positive that being an asshole is not a disqualifier for participating in the American experience.
As for me, I'll continue to waste the five seconds or so it requires me to make those 13 fucking keystrokes.

I mean, all we've seen here all week are purposefully foul-mouthed rallying cries against "censorship" for any kind of language people want to use, whether hurtful to others or not. And really, it was just people asking to please be sensitive to the feelings of others.

So (given that I don't give a rat's ass about soccer, and because I already heard the result of the game at the time it happened, because the spouse was watching it in the other room), I say ... if people want to goddamn well post the results of some sporting event in the header of their threads, that is their right as red-blooded Americans under the Constitution of the United States!! Free Speech, pip pip, and all that rot!!

Goose, meet gander. And have a nice day!

I actually agree that courtesy suggests not putting spoilers in subject lines, but that isn't going to stop me from pointing out the irony in the OP advocating for censorship or restraint in situations he cares about while insisting that freedom demands free use of bigoted slurs.

Mostly the courtesy is extended to those working, so the default would be until they have time to come home to view it for themselves. For international sporting events, time zone changes play a big factor. What I do know, is real-time updates are an absolute no-no.

The soccer match was aired live. It's not like it was blacked out to be run in prime time like the Olympics. Am I supposed to not talk about the Super Bowl for at least 24 hours lest someone recorded it and wants to watch it at 10 the next morning?

If I REALLY wanted to avoid sports spoilers, I would not get on the internet. Hell, I'd probably hide in a cave. Because chances are even walking into a bar or cafe, a department store....anywhere....I'm going to accidentally run into the score.

I don't know. I've never been one of those guys who records a sport and doesn't "want to know" until I get home. To me it's pointless. It happened, and it's done. It's not like a movie or tv show.

I watch events live too, but my schedule allows that. The recorded version looks exactly the same as the live event it recorded, so watching it if you don't know the outcome is no different than watching it live. Plus there are events that don't provide live coverage due to time zone differences. The same arguments against those spoiler warnings were used then, too. It's rationalizing inconsiderate behavior.

Not only that, he refers to the insulting term of "swarm" to talk about the fact that feminists as well as other DUers are calling him on his own double-standard (about which the thread makes clear).

timezone, over many days, with many varied contests and events, and the networks and news outlets weren't posting the results and touting them on the TV and radio as they happened.

There were viewing parties (LIVE television) for the soccer game all over the US--that wasn't the case with the Olympics. You could watch some live Olympic shit online but NBC was consolidating the stuff and playing it on tape delay for the average schmucks here.

I don't think the comparison is really apt; that said, if I were determined to avoid learning the results of the soccer game, I'd avoid the internet entirely to say nothing of radio and television. Even the wrong sort of home page could give it away. And I'd avoid crowds, too--no going into Starbucks just in case someone was talking about the game results...!

Word Cup is every four years. Comparing a World Cup event, particularly one that determines whether the nation's team will advance, does not compare to the scores of a regular season game of a regional team. Far more people are interested and watching that one event compared to a Red Sox game. Being spoiled on a once in four years world event is a bigger deal. But if I were in a forum that asked me not to posts Red Sox scores in the headlines, I'd comply there, too, because why not? It's not like being asked to take a day off to help someone move. It's effortless. It's far more childish to insist on spoiling.

51. So you couldn't put your internet use on hold for a few hours?

Is your existence so empty without being connected and in touch every minute of every day that you'd just shrivel up and die without getting your internet fix every few minutes?

Stop ragging on other people and get a life.

But the right to be rude on a message board is enshrined in the Constitution, apparently. But not criticizing said behavior and calling for people to consider others, of course.

I just don't justify the behavior. The internet being full of rude people doesn't mean it's okay to be rude.

But generally speaking, no, you can't control other people's behavior. But again, that's not a justification for the behavior. Not tolerating rude behavior isn't controlling. The rude person can go someplace where it's more tolerated if they don't like the heat.

In this case while decrying it when it comes to bigoted slurs is not derailing. It is pointing out the obvious.
You don't want to be confronted with your own double-standards. You insist on common courtesy about sports scores but refuse to grant that same courtesy to the great swaths of the populating targeted in the bigoted language you insisted should not be "censored" by juries. That you see your own feelings as more important than those of the large segments of the population targeted by hateful slurs is revealing but not surprising.

without them.

At times all 90 minutes of regulation plus added time, or OT.

You must have missed the FINAL four years ago.

No matter, I will stick to Twitter from now on, and call all breaking news SPOILER ALERT, in fact, all of my OPS will have that warning now.
