Found this good article that explains quite rationally the mystery of Lois Lerner's missing emails. This article shows that Lerner contacted IRS customer service about her hard disk problems well before there was any investigation. It's obvious she wanted her hard disk and its contents recovered as much as anyone.
It also says that the IRS policy was to back up only 500 mb of emails (where Lerner worked); after that the old emails were moved to the individual's computer (which I would bet were old because of budget constraints). Further the backup policy was to reuse backup tapes after 6 months. I worked in technology in the 1990s, and to me these IRS policies sound like no one ever bothered to update them. They were remnants of another era in computers. It's more than likely that these IRS computer policies predate Obama.

(14,449 posts)Having to keep 7 years is a burden. I would rather two years quite frankly. I hope this changes because of this problem.

(4,876 posts)The IRS was doing their job and Conservatives got their panties in a bunch. The intense irony of the whole thing is the only group that lost their tax exempt status was liberal.
