July 11, 2014
In Nanny State America if you bring your child to a country music concert, you will be threatened with arrest for child endangerment.
Megan Christopherson was at a Brad Paisley concert at the Sleep Train Amphitheater in San Diego, CA with her two children.
They were excited that this time they got to go in the front area next to the stage, referred to as the pit.
Mrs. Christopherson, like millions of other mothers do at concerts all over the world, brought her baby to the show.
During the show, Mrs. Christophersons baby became hungry, so she started breast feeding.
That is when, Christopherson says, she was approached by security guards, under suspicion that she was drinking, which seems like quite the ridiculous assertion after seeing how articulate she is later in the video.

(114,904 posts)He said it had nothing to do with her breastfeeding. It was super loud. She was in the pit. He made what I thought were good points. I don't think it's a safe place for an infant either.

(61,697 posts)A lot of states have laws making it illegal to harass a nursing mother, even if part of the breast or nipple or aureola is showing.
But if the noise level is really loud, then yes, the baby shouldn't be there.

(114,904 posts)It was about the danger to the baby in the pit- both noise and crowd. he was courteous and professional and kind. he did not threaten her in any way. He gave her the option to move to another part of the venue.

(10,952 posts)if she had that baby near the speakers. It is one thing to be old enough to make the decision to go to a concert and even sit near the speakers. The baby didn't have a choice to be there. It seems like Mom made a poor decision I am really surprised that something was said to her a lot earlier in the evening.

I would like to add that I would never bring an infant to a concert.

(114,904 posts)she was. it's stupid to stand in the pit of a very loud concert with a lot of people, with an infant in a a carrier on your chest.

(25,586 posts)Concerts are loud. I'm in my forties and that shit still hurts my ears sometimes, especially in the pit area.
Dumbass.

(82,383 posts)It didn't occur to her that it was not good for the baby, but rather than admit she learned something, she acted like she was this big victim. If there was a crush and the kid was hurt, she'd have sued saying they shouldn't have let her into the pit.

(13,110 posts)I have been to many concerts.
Upwards of 100.
I have never seen a child young enough to still be nursing at any of them.

(10,952 posts)seemed really obnoxious. It wasn't just the noise level but the location and concern about the safety of the baby if he crowd surged forward.

(14,881 posts)She claims to have been breastafeeding earlier, but has not proof and even if it happened, it was a separate incident and didn't involve this cop. He never said anything about breast feeding. Her bringing it up was totally irrelevent.
I've been in a concert pit and nearly been crushed. Admittedly a Doors concert, but that does happen even at crappy concerts.
He offered her choices of safer seating or a refund, and he was polite.
She was rude and argumentative. He never said anything about breast feeding. Her bringing it up was totally irrelevent.
She needs proof that excess volume at concerts can damage hearing? Seriously a jerk.

(18,318 posts)LEO's actions were over-reach, and they may still be, but there is a legitimate concern about crowd rushes.
Back in the days of Austin's punk scene, several punks brought their kids to the small-med. venues, but they were at least 6 or 7. In the middle of all the flying bodies, empty beer cans, and human collapse, you'd get tapped on the lower back: That meant a kid wanted up on your shoulders where they could get into cat fights with other kids as the lower elevation adults slammed into each other. Great fun for all!
